McGovern was a wide receiver on the football team for four years (1980-82, 1984). He finished his career with 163 receptions and over 2,000 yards. McGovern was the school record holder for receptions in a career until 2001. He also held the school mark for receptions in a season with 61 (1982) until 1999.
 
His senior year, he was named to the All-Conference first team, the ECAC Honor Roll and was the South Jersey Touchdown Club’s College Player of the Year. McGovern was also selected to the All-Conference first team in 1982 and the second team in 1981.
 
In 1985, he received his bachelor’s in business administration with a specialization in marketing. McGovern was one of the founding members and one of the first Board of Governors for the Brown and Gold Gridiron Club. McGovern is a 1979 graduate of Collingswood High School.
