John Bunting was the head football coach at Glassboro State/Rowan for only five years, but he had a tremendous impact during that brief stint.

As the Profs’ first full-time coach, Bunting guided team to an overall 38-14-2 record, but progressed from a 5-5 record in his first year, to a 9-2 mark in 1991 and a 12-1 record in 1992.
The 1991 team made school history, as Glassboro State earned its first bid to the NCAA Playoffs and won its first outright NJAC title since 1977.

Bunting’s 1992 team went undefeated in the regular season (10-0) and won its first two NCAA Playoff games, to reach the national semifinals. Although the Profs’ run ended with a loss to eventual national champion Washington and Jefferson, they compiled a school-record 12 wins while making the first of Rowan’s 10 national semifinals appearances through the years.

He came to Glassboro after a playing career that spanned 11 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and two years with the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars. The linebacker was a member of the Eagles’ 1980 team that played in Super Bowl XV, while he won a USFL title with the Stars in 1982.

After leaving Rowan, he served as an assistant coach in the NFL with St. Louis and New Orleans before taking over in 2001 as head coach at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina, a position he held until 2006.
