He lettered in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track for three seasons (1974-77). Zentmeyer was the New Jersey State College champion in the 800 meters (1975) and won the 800 meters at the Collegiate Track Conference Indoor Championships in 1976. The 800 meter champion at the 1977 College Track Conference Championships, Zentmeyer earned All-America in the 800 meters twice (third in 1976, third in 1977) at the national championships. He was a member of the 1977 All-America 4x400 meter relay.
 
Captain of the 1976 indoor track team, Zentmeyer was on the Dean’s List from 1974-78 and received the Martin Luther King Scholar Award. He earned his bachelor’s in special education in 1978 and master’s in educational leadership at Regent University (VA). He was inducted into the Pleasantville High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
