A guard, Steele played basketball for four years. Her junior season, she scored her 1,000th career point. In 1986, she finished her career with 1,732 points and was the school’s all-time leading scorer until 1998. She held the school mark for most points in a game with 49 against Rutgers-Newark (Feb. 10, 1984). Steele was the team’s captain all four years.

She was a member of the Martin Luther King Scholarship program and was voted Most Likely to Succeed. Steele earned her bachelor’s degree in communications in 1987 and was on the Dean’s List her senior year. Steele graduated from Manasquan High School in 1981.
