Smith College

Under head coach Penny Kempf, the field hockey team captured the 2002 national title with a 1-0 victory over Messiah College in the final game. The Profs finished the season with a perfect 21-0 record and they broke the school mark (18) for wins in a season.

Michelle Thornton scored the winning goal against Messiah with 54 seconds left in the first half. Jackie Massara and Jess Wadleigh each had an assist. Christine Buetas turned away four shots for the shutout. In the semifinals, Rowan defeated Salisbury University, 3-2 in two overtimes. Jammie Hicks recorded the game-winner at 85:13. Becky Peterson put the Profs up 1-0 at 8:44 with a pass from Beth Raleigh. At 33:18, Raleigh scored the second goal and Hicks assisted. Salisbury tied the score with two goals in the second half. Buteas ended the contest with five saves.
 
The team shut out the University of Mary Washington, 5-0 in the third round. Rowan was ahead 4-0 in the first half with goals from Kelly Rose, Peterson, Hicks and Raleigh. Rose, Wadleigh and Massara each tallied an assist. Peterson registered the final goal in the second period. Rowan had a 4-1 victory over McDaniel College in the second round. The Profs led 2-0 with both goals from Raleigh. In the second half, Peterson scored with an assist from Renee Phelps. Rose hit the cage for the final score. Buteas made five saves.
 
Thornton, Peterson and Phelps were all named to the All-Tournament team along with teammate Lindsay Hanson.
