Rowan University - Glassboro State College Hall of Fame
The 1981 Men’s Soccer Team compiled a record of 19-1-3 and won the program’s first national championship. Glassboro State defeated Scranton, 2-1, needing four overtimes in the title game, as Scott Salisbury scored both goals. The match was tied 1-1 in the first half as Tony O'Connor assisted on the Profs' first goal, and the teams were scoreless until Salisbury netted the unassisted game-winner at 2:34 into the fourth overtime. He was named the NCAA Championship's Most Valuable Player for the second time in three years.
The team was captained by midfielder Tim Dempsey and back Jeff Wieboldt. Goalkeeper Walt Gotrell was sensational for the Profs, giving up just one goal in five tournament games, an NCAA record. During the year, the Profs won the NJSCAC title and advanced to the NCAA Finals by defeating Averett (1-0), North Carolina-Greensboro (3-0), SUNY Cortland (1-0) and Brandeis (1-0).
