Jones was a wide receiver for the football team for three seasons. His senior year he was fourth in the nation in receptions and yardage. Jones was named to the All-Conference first team and received Little All-American honorable mention. He had a tryout with the Washington Redskins in 1977. Jones was also an outfielder on the baseball team. He received the medallion award for most outstanding athlete and the Albert White Award his senior year. Jones served as president of the men’s athletic association in 1976 and the bureau of athletics in 1977. He was a student government senator from 1975-77.
