The
1993 Rowan Football Team played in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the NCAA Division III Football Championship, for the first time in school history. This started an unparalleled run of success that shaped the program’s history and saw the Profs reach the championship game five times in a span of nine years, which included semifinal berths in all but two seasons.
Guided by first-year head coach K.C. Keeler, the Profs went 11-2 and won their third consecutive NJAC title with a 5-0 record. After starting the year 1-1, Rowan put together a seven-game winning streak in which it outscored its opponents, 286-104. After defeating Montclair State, 41-15, to claim the conference title, the Profs won NCAA Playoff games against Buffalo State (29-6) and William Paterson (37-9) to reach the NCAA Semifinals for the second year in a row.
Matched up against Washington & Jefferson in the semifinals, Rowan posted a 23-16 win as Ed Hesson threw three touchdown passes, including the gamewinner, a 53-yard strike to Priest Ramsey in the fourth quarter. Â
The East Region champion Profs faced off against the North Region’s top team, Mount Union, in Salem, VA, with the national title on the line. Although Mount Union prevailed, 34-24, in the NCAA Final, Rowan would return to the championship game again in 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999.
The Profs were selected as the 1993 ECAC Team of the Year and were awarded with the Lambert Cup for the first time, as the top Division III Team in the East.
