Vassar Blanks John Jay, 5-0 In Rowan Invitational Tournament Consolation

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Vassar College men’s soccer team had a 5-0 victory over John Jay College in the consolation game of the Rowan Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

Vassar improves to 4-1, while John Jay has a 1-3 record.  In the championship, Catholic University edged Rowan University, 3-2 in double overtime.  In the first round on Friday, Catholic defeated Vassar, 2-1 and Rowan had a 7-1 win over John Jay.

Fifty seven seconds in to the game, midfielder Juliano Pereira (jr. Albany, CA/Albany) put the Brewers on top, 1-0.  His first shot was blocked and he kicked the rebound into the lower right corner of the net.  At 39:18, Pereira picked up his second goal.  Backs Zander Mrlik (sr. San Francisco, CA/Saint Ignatius College) and Nick Hess (fr. Troy, NY/Averill Park) both had an assist.

Midfielder Jordan Palmer (fr. Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura) found the net on a cross from forward Tom Wiechert (so. Capristrano Beach, CA/San Clemente) at 56:31 in the second period.  Forward Rob Manukyan (jr. Yerevan, Armenia/United Nations International School) converted a penalty kick at 58:57.  Vassar’s final goal came at 61:53.  Palmer sent a long pass to forward Andre Cousineau (so. Altadena, CA/Eagle Rock), who shot the ball into the lower right corner of the net.

The All-Tournament Team included: Vassar back Evan Seltzer (jr. Philadelphia, PA/The Shipley School) and Mrlik, John Jay forward Navid Allah Morad (jr. Balkh, Afghanistan/Flushing International), Rowan midfielders Andrew Brawner (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape), Shane Kohler (so. Flemington, NJ/Hunderdon Central Reg.) and Dylan Smith (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and forward Christian Fountain (so. Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) and Catholic midfielders/backs Kevin Romano (jr. Freehold, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) and Hunter Horvath (so. Southlake, TX, Southlake Carroll), forward Ian Smith (jr. Maple Glen, PA/Upper Dublin) and back Ethan DaPonte (jr. Bristol, RI/Portsmouth Abbey).  Midfielder Mike Brennan (sr. Feasterville, PA/St. Joseph’s Prep) was selected the Most Valuable Player.
