GLASSBORO, NJ – The Catholic University men’s soccer team won 2-1 over Vassar College in the first game of the Rowan University Invitational on Friday night.
In the second game, John Jay College meets Rowan at 8 p.m. The Cardinals (2-1) will play the winner of the John Jay/Rowan contest in the championship on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The consolation is scheduled for 2 p.m. The consolation and championship times were moved up because of the forecast for thunderstorms in the early evening.
Catholic had a 1-0 advantage after the first half. Midfielder Mike Brennan (sr. Feasterville, PA/St. Joseph’s Prep) scored at 17:21 with a shot to the lower left corner of the Brewers’ net. Midfielder Kevin Romano (jr. Freehold, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) registered the assist.
Forward Ian Smith (jr. Maple Glen, PA/Upper Dublin) made the score 2-0 at 82:47. Smith also had a shot to the left side of the goal after a pass from back Paul Lewis (fr. Beltsville, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti). Midfielder Gavin Jennings (fr. Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) scored for Vassar at 85:10 with an assist from midfielder Adrien Demelier (jr. Paris, France/Amity Reg.).
Catholic totaled 14 shots while Vassar took seven. In the Cardinals’ net, goalie Torsten Meuschke (so. Gaitherburg, MD/Magruder) made three saves. For the Brewers, goalkeeper Gary Claus (sr. Colchester, CT/Bacon Academy) turned away seven shots.
