Men's Soccer Ties La Sierra, 3-3 After Two Overtimes

SANTA CRUZ, CA – The Rowan University men’s soccer team tied La Sierra University, 3-3 after two overtimes in a nonconference game on Friday night.  The game was played at the University of California-Santa Cruz.

The Profs have a 5-5-2 record, while the Golden Eagles are 4-7-1.  Rowan took a 1-0 lead at 12:48 on an unassisted goal by forward Christian Fountain (so. Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford).  Thirty-eight seconds later, midfielder Diego Fontes (so. Montevideo, Uruguay/Simi Valley) tied the game (1-1).  At 15:26, midfielder Kenneth Henry (jr. Concord, CA/Contra Costa College) hit the net to put the Golden Eagles on top, 2-1 at halftime.

At 49:18, back Chris Grammatico (jr. Batavia, NY/Batavia) knocked in a pass from midfielder Connor Moffat (fr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and the score was tied, 2-2.  Back Joel Hernandez (jr. Coachella, CA/Coachella Valley) scored on a corner kick at 54:05 to give La Sierra a 3-2 advantage.  With 3:19 remaining, back Shane Dooley (sr. Burlington Twp., NJ/Burlington Twp.) sent the game into overtime.  Midfielder Brian Kahn (jr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) picked up the assist.

Rowan took 25 shots and La Sierra had 18.  Profs’ goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (sr. Waterford, NJ/Hammmonton) made one save in the first period.  Goalkeeper Ryan Gill (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) stopped four shots in the final 65:00.  Golden Eagles’ goalkeeper Peter Martinez (sr. Gilbert, AZ/Higley) turned away eight shots.

Rowan plays the University of California-Santa Cruz on Saturday, October 6 at 6 p.m.
