Men's Soccer Wins The Rowan Invitational Tournament With 3-0 Victory Over Ithaca

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team had a 3-0 shutout over Ithaca College on the second day of the Rowan Invitational Tournament on Saturday night.

Rowan and Ramapo College were both undefeated in the tournament, but the Profs claimed the title due to goal differential. Earlier on Saturday, Ramapo had a 3-0 win over Berkeley College (NY). On Friday night, Rowan defeated Berkeley, 3-0 while Ramapo had a 4-2 win over Ithaca.

Forward Julian Berrios (jr. Lakewood, NJ/Calvary Academy) led the Profs with two goals. Forward Christian Fountain (fr. Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) added one goal off the bench. Forward Cristhian Gonzalez (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Calasenz (Colombia)) and midfielders Andrew Brawner (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Shane Kohler (fr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) picked up one assist apiece.

Rowan took 12 shots, while Ithaca had eight. Profs’ goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (jr. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) made one save in the first half. Goalkeeper Ryan Gill (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) stopped three shots in the second period. Bombers’ goalkeeper Jack Van Adelsberg (so. Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) turned away six shots.

Berrios put Rowan ahead 1-0 with a goal at 5:34 in the first. Kohler fired a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper and Berrios kicked it in the net at 49:34 in the second half. Fountain scored on a feed from Brawner with 10:13 left to play.

Berrios was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The All-Tournament Team included: back Chris Freeman (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains), midfielders Jonathan Yazo (jr. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) and Joseph Kane (jr. Delran, NJ/Delran) and forward Rob Santaniello (jr. Oakland, NJ/Ramapo) from Ramapo, goalkeeper Camilo Montes from Berkeley, back Chris Voehl (fr. Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) and forward Casey Williamson (fr. Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) from Ithaca and midfielder Shane Dooley (jr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.), backs Zack Zahrend (sr. Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) and Tony Verchio (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Kohler from Rowan.

Rowan travels to Atlanta, GA for the Sonny Carter Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, September 10-11. The Profs play Oglethorpe University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and host Emory University on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
