Ramapo Wins Over Ithaca, 4-2 at Rowan Invitational

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Ramapo College men’s soccer team won, 4-2 over Ithaca College in the opening round of the Rowan Invitational Tournament on Friday night. Forward Rob Santaniello led the Roadrunners with three goals.

On Saturday, Ramapo plays Berkeley College (NY) at 5 p.m. followed by Rowan University against Ithaca at 7 p.m. In the first game, Rowan shutout Berkeley, 4-0.

Santaniello (jr. Oakland, NJ/Ramapo) started the scoring at 4:40 for the Roadrunners. He hit the bottom left corner of the Ithaca goal on a long pass from back Chris Freeman (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains). Last year, Santaniello led the nation in goals (1.17) and points (2.56) per game and total goals (21). He was also ranked second in total points (46).

In the second period, Santaniello made the score 2-0 at 62:10. His shot from inside the box went in the left corner. Ramapo was ahead 3-0 after midfielder Jonathan Yazo (jr. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) scored (66:32) on a direct kick.

Forward James Shankland (so. Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) put Ithaca on the scoreboard at 69:48. He had a direct kick from 25 yards out that went in the right side of the net. Santaniello registered his third goal (73:05) with a pass from Yazo through the box. Ithaca’s second goal came on a penalty kick by Shankland with 46 seconds remaining.

The Roadrunners finished the game with 19 total shots and the Bombers registered 16. In the Ramapo goal, Steve Monaghan (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) had three saves. For Ithaca, goalkeeper Jack Van Adelsberg (so. Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) turned away five shots.
