ATLANA, GA – The Rowan University men’s soccer team fell to Oglethorpe University, 4-0 in the first round of the Sonny Carter Invitational. The two-day tournament is being held at Emory University.
In the other first round game, Methodist University won 2-0 over Emory. On Sunday, Oglethorpe (2-1) meets Methodist (2-0-1) at 11 a.m. while Rowan (2-1) plays Emory (0-3) at 1:30 p.m.
Four different players scored for Oglethorpe. Backs Justin Graves (so. Dunwoody, GA/Dunwoody) and Niko Papanikolopoul (so. Atlanta, GA/Clemson) and midfielder Ben Robertson (Boone, NC/Watauga) and forward Jakub Madej (fr. Atlanta, GA/Cracow) all had one goal. Forwards Nick Williamson (so. Pensacola, FL/Catholic) and Mark Lavery (sr. Woodstock, GA/Kentucky) and midfielders Aaron Walker (jr. Woodstock, GA/Etowah) and Jeff Arsenault (jr. Crestwood, KY/Greenville College) registered one assist apiece.
Oglethorpe totaled 19 shots and Rowan took 11. Goalkeeper Frank Peterson (jr. Woodstock, GA/Memphis) made one save for his first shutout on the season. Ryan Gill (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), Kevin Vasta (so. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and Michael Fanz-Huster (jr. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) shared the Profs’ goalkeeping duties. Gill stopped two shots in the first half. Vasta played 6:25 while Fanz-Huster had one save in 38:35.
