Baseball Opens NJAC Play With Doubleheader Split Against Ramapo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader with Ramapo College on Sunday.
 
The Profs (15-7) won the first game, 4-0 before the Roadrunners (7-8) recovered to take the nightcap, 3-2. It was the first conference games of the season for both teams. The contests were rescheduled from Saturday, April 1 due to field conditions.
 
Right-hander Danny Serreino (so. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) hurled seven innings for the win in game one. He (2-0) surrendered just one hit, which did not come until the seventh. Serreino walked two while striking out seven. Righty Cory Heitler (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) suffered the loss (0-2).
 
Center fielder Shane Brown (sr. Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) went two-for-three with one RBI and two runs scored. Right fielder Monny Strickland (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) drove in two runs and hit a double. First baseman Joe Sadler (jr. Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) knocked in one run. Left fielder Jason Clapper (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) recorded a double and scored one time. Shortstop Matt Edwards (so. Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) touched the plate one time.
 
Brown singled with two outs in the third. Clapper walked before Sadler sent a base hit to left center, scoring Brown. Rowan put two runs on the board in the fifth when Strickland doubled to right and Clapper and Brown came home. Brown's sacrifice fly in the sixth plated Edwards.
 
Ramapo came back to win the second game with one run in the seventh and two in the eighth. Left fielder Matt Chemis (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and right fielder Joe Maugeri (jr. Flanders, NJ/Roxbury) registered back-to-back singles in the seventh. Center fielder Brandon Martinez (sr. River Edge, NJ/River Dell) flied out but an error on the play allowed Chemis to score and the Roadrunners were within one (2-1).
 
Shortstop Austin Unglaub (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) had a one-out base hit in the eighth. Second baseman Bobby Shannon (jr. Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) followed with a double and Unglaub went to third. After a walk, designated hitter Rob DeAngelis (sr. Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) sent a two-run double to right field and Ramapo took a 3-2 lead.
 
Right-handed pitcher CJ Growney (so. Avenel, NJ/Colonia) was the winning pitcher in relief. He (2-2) went the final 2.1 innings and gave up two hits. Righty Andrew Cohen (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) did not allow a hit until the seventh but was tagged with the loss (1-3). He yielded three runs, two earned, and four hits in 7.1 frames. Cohen fanned six batters.
 
Brown and Clapper each went two-for-four and scored a run. Sadler drove in two runs.

Rowan struck in the first when Brown touched the plate on Sadler's sac fly. The Profs took a 2-0 lead in the third. Clapper singled with two outs then stole second. Sadler brought him home with a base hit to right.
 
Rowan hosts Penn State Abington in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m.
