Box Score WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Benedictine University (IL), 10-2 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Tuesday.
The Profs are 4-4 on the season and the Eagles have a 1-4 mark. Right-hander Nick Juliano (jr. Erial, NJ/Highland Reg.) went seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned on nine hits with six strikeouts for the win (1-1). Righty Mike Spalla (jr. Chicago, IL/De La Salle) suffered the loss (0-1).
Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (sr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) was three-for-three with a double, three runs scored and three batted in. First baseman Casey Grimes (sr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) had three hits (four at bats), a double, a home run and four RBIs. He also scored one time. Center fielder Ryan Pavlik (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) was three-for-four with one RBI and he crossed the plate one time. Left fielder Eric Oliver (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) tallied one run and one RBI. Benedictine outfielder Matthew Higgs (sr. Otsego, MI/Otsego) recorded three hits (four at bats) and scored both runs.
Grimes opened the scoring with a three-run blast in the first. The Eagles got on the board in the bottom half when Higgs came home on an error. Rowan added three more runs in the second. McMenamin drove in two with a base hit and Oliver scored catcher Greg Myers (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) with a bases-loaded walk.
Pavlik's sacrifice fly in the fifth plated McMenamin to make the score 7-1. Benedictine restored a six-run deficit in the bottom of the frame on a RBI groundout by catcher/left fielder Kyle Bock (so. Island Lake, IL/Wauconda). McMenamin and Grimes smacked consecutive RBI doubles in the sixth and the Profs led 9-2. The final run came in the eighth when shortstop Jason Clapper (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored on a fielder's choice.
Rowan takes on Gallaudet University on Wednesday, March 18 at 10:30 a.m. in Auburndale, FL.
