Montclair State Advances With 5-4 Win Over William Paterson In The NJAC Baseball Championship Tournament

Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The Montclair State University baseball team defeated William Paterson University, 5-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Saturday. The sixth-seeded Pioneers were eliminated with the loss.
 
The third-seeded Red Hawks have a 22-16 record and advance to the final day of the tournament on Sunday. Montclair State will face #2 Rowan University at noon. William Paterson drops to 14-21-1 overall. Left-hander Dylan Papa (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) earned the victory. He (5-2) pitched 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Lefty John Silvestri (sr. Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) threw the final 1.2 innings to pick up his fourth save. Right-hander Frankie Colasante (so. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) was the losing pitcher. He (1-4) hurled five innings, giving up four runs, three earned and eight hits.
 
For Montclair State, first baseman Christopher Reynolds (jr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) had three hits (five at bats), a double, one run scored and drove in two. Third baseman Connor Abreu (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) went two for five with a double, one run scored and two RBIs. Designated hitter Jayson Stolz (sr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) knocked in one run, while right fielder Ryan Long (fr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.), catcher Anderson Rosa (jr. Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) and shortstop Cody Pace (sr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) each crossed the plate one time. Pace hit a double.
 
Shortstop K.C. Abel (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) was two for four for William Paterson. He had a double and scored twice. Designated hitter Trevor Haughney (sr. Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge), right fielder Jimmy Kenny (so. Fairfield, NJ/West Essex Reg.) and first baseman Alex Derner (so. River Edge, NJ/River Dell Reg.) had one RBI apiece. Third baseman Rob Pasternak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had two runs scored.
 
William Paterson began the scoring in the first inning. Haughney singled to right field to score Abel. Montclair State responded with two runs in the bottom half. Reynolds doubled to center field and plated Abreu and Long. Abreu hit a two-run double in the sixth to put the Red Hawks up 4-1. The Pioneers cut the deficit to 4-3 in the seventh. Abel scored on a groundout and Derner scored Pasternak with a single. Montclair State added an insurance run in the bottom half. Stolz singled to left field and Reynolds came home. Pasternak scored on an error in the ninth.
