Baseball Holds On To Defeat Widener, 6-5

Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team survived a ninth-inning rally to defeat Widener University, 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Profs led 6-2 entering the ninth inning. Catcher Paul Shepherd (jr. Secane, PA/Misericordia University) led off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Josh Everett (jr. Harveys Lake, PA/Lake-Lehman). Third baseman Michael Elfreth (fr. Washington Twp., NJ/St. Augustine) had a base hit and Everett advanced to third. Everett scored on a fielder's choice by right fielder Bob Barnett (fr. Glenolden, PA/Interboro). First baseman Michael Riverso (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) singled and there were runners at first and second with two away.
 
After a fly out, shortstop Nicolas Enos (fr. Williamstown, NJ/St. Augustine) brought home Barnett with a base hit to cut the deficit to two. Pinch runner/designated hitter Greg McDonough hit a RBI single to score Riverso and the score was 6-5. Right-hander Carlos Ruiz (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) entered the game and retired second baseman Justin Healey (fr. Ocean City, NJ/West Chester University) for his fifth save. Healey hit a sharp ground ball towards the right side and second baseman Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) made a diving play to stop the ball short of the outfield grass and threw to first for the final out.

Righty Andrew Lysy (so. Allentown, NJ/Allentown) picked up the win. He (2-1) threw six innings of one-run ball, scattering eight hits. Lysy struck out seven batters. Right-handed pitcher Glenn Stanners (sr. Brookhaven, PA/Delaware County CC) suffered the loss. He (3-4) pitched seven frames, allowing five runs, three earned on 11 hits and striking out three.
 
For Rowan, shortstop Ryan Williams (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) and Benak both went three for five. Williams had a triple, scored two runs and knocked in one. Benak had a double and three RBIs. Left fielder Nick Kreiger (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) doubled and drove in one run. He crossed the plate two times. Catcher Stephen Petriello (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and first baseman Rich Powelson (jr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) each had one run scored.
 
Riverso had three hits (five at bats) with one run scored and one RBI for the Pride. Enos knocked in two runs, while Barnett and McDonough each had one RBI. Barnett also scored twice. Elfreth and Everett both crossed the plate one time.
 
Widener tallied the first run in the opening inning when Enos plated Elfreth with a sacrifice fly. The Profs had three runs in the second. Kreiger doubled home Petriello and Powelson scored on an error. Williams had a RBI single and Kreiger came home. The Profs tacked on one run in both the fourth and sixth innings. Benak doubled to right center and Williams crossed the plate in the fourth followed by Benak's RBI single in the sixth. Kreiger scored on the play. Riverso singled home Barnett in the seventh then Benak brought in Williams in the eighth with a single through the right side.
