Box Score 2 LAKELAND, FL – The #10 Rowan University baseball team split its doubleheader with Gallaudet University on Wednesday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Profs dropped game one, 2-0 and won the second, 12-3.
Rowan has an overall record of 7-2 and Gallaudet has a mark of 10-6. In game two, right-handed pitcher Carlos Ruiz (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) earned the victory in relief. Ruiz (1-0) threw 0.2 innings, not allowing a base runner. Righty Chris Guinn suffered the loss, giving up five runs, three earned on nine hits in five innings pitched.
Left fielder Nick Kreiger (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) went two for three with two runs scored. Right fielder Ryan Pavlik (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) produced two hits and two runs. Center fielder Eric Perez (sr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge), third baseman Kevin McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) and shortstop Ryan Williams (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) each had two hits in four at bats. Perez and McMenamin had two RBIs and one run scored apiece, while Williams had one run scored and knocked in one run. McMenamin also hit two doubles. First baseman Rich Powelson (jr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) had two hits in three at bats with a run scored and a RBI. Catcher Connor Grant (sr. Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Reg.) collected two RBIs.
First baseman Justin Strong was two for three for Gallaudet. Left fielder Chase Magsig and Guinn each had one RBI. Center fielder William Bissell and Magsig produced one double apiece.
Rowan second baseman Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) drove in a run in the first inning on a double. Gallaudet tallied two runs in the fourth as second baseman JJ Klein scored on an error and Guinn had a RBI single. The Profs regained the lead (3-2) in the fifth when Pavlik crossed the plate on an error and Perez drove in designated hitter Casey Grimes (jr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) with a single. Magsig's run-scoring double tied the game in the sixth.
Rowan broke the game open with nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Grant hit a RBI double and Williams knocked him in with a single. Williams later scored on an error. Grimes produced a run-scoring double and Perez scored Pavlik with a base hit. McMenamin's two-run double made the score 10-3. Powelson and Grant then each hit sacrifice flies.
Righty Danny O'Donnell recorded the victory in the first game. He (2-1) pitched a complete game, giving up just five hits and struck out seven batters. Right-handed pitcher Brad Machinski (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) suffered the loss. Machinski (0-1) allowed one earned run on six hits in a complete game effort.
Right fielder Marcus Smith went two for three for the Bison with two runs scored. Klein recorded a hit and two RBIs. Magsig had two hits in two at bats. McMenamin was two for three for the Profs with a pair of doubles.
Smith scored the first run of the game when Klein reached on an error in the first inning. Gallaudet added an insurance run in the third when Klein's RBI single plated Smith.
Rowan faces Ripon College (WI) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Winter Haven, FL.
