Box Score AUBURNDALE, FL – The #10 Rowan University baseball team was handed its first loss of the season on Tuesday afternoon, falling to #5 Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 12-10 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Rowan and Wis.-Stevens Point both have records of 6-1. Righty Cam Siedl (2-0) earned the victory for the Pointers. He threw seven innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits. Left-hander Zach Wendorf recorded his first save save, pitching 1.2 perfect innings. Right-handed pitcher Johnny Dunn (jr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) (0-1) took the loss.
Designated hitter Kyle McHugh, left fielder Brandon Kranz, first baseman Cody Hanke and catcher Harry Steldt each had two hits for Wis.-Stevens Point. Hanke also hit a homer, knocked in four runs and scored twice. McHugh and Kranz scored two runs and had one RBI apiece. Second baseman Clint Rose recorded two runs and drove in two more.
Rowan third base Kevin McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) had three hits in four at bats with a double and two runs. Second baseman Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and catcher Connor Grant (sr. Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Reg.) each went two for four with a run scored and three RBIs. Benak produced a double and Grant had a home run.
Rose hit a two-run double in the second inning for a 2-0 Pointer lead. Rowan scored five unanswered runs and led 5-2 going to the bottom of the fifth. Benak recorded a two RBI single in the third after shortstop Ryan Williams (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) scored on a balk. In the fifth, first baseman Casey Grimes (jr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) produced a run scoring single and Benak had a sacrifice fly. Wis.-Stevens Point regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a four-spot. Third baseman Taylor Carlson had a RBI single and Hanke smacked a three-run home run.
Grant's single in the sixth plated McMenamin to tie the game, but the Pointers then scored five in the sixth and one in the seventh for a 12-6 lead. Rowan cut the deficit to 12-10 with four runs in the eighth. Center fielder Eric Perez (sr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) hit a RBI single, designated hitter Eric Sellitto (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had a RBI groundout and Grant slammed a two-run home run.
Rowan will play a doubleheader against Gallaudet University in Lakeland, FL on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.
