Box Score AUBURNDALE, FL – The Rowan University baseball team defeated FDU-Florham, 11-5 on Sunday afternoon at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
First baseman Casey Grimes (jr. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) went three for five, hitting two doubles with two runs scored and two RBIs for Rowan. Right fielder Ryan Pavlik (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.), second baseball Mark Benak (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and catcher Connor Grant (sr. Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Reg.) recorded two hits apiece. Pavlik hit two doubles, scored two and knocked in one. Benak also recorded two doubles. Designated hitter Eric Sellitto (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) tallied two runs and two RBIs, while left fielder Nick Kreiger (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) hit a triple, scored a run and had an RBI.
FDU-Florham catcher Alex Geramita (jr. Old Tappan, NJ/Don Bosco) had three hits (four at bats) and scored a run. Shortstop Brendan Adams (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.), first baseman Frank LaGuarina (sr. Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) and right fielder James Dertouzos (so. Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) each tailed two hits. LaGuarina drove in three runs and Dertouzos knocked in one.
Rowan has an overall mark of 5-0, while FDU-Florham has a 2-3 record. Left-handed pitcher Ryan Sharkey (1-0) (jr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Mary) earned the victory for the Profs, throwing six innings and giving up three runs on six hits. Devils right-handed pitcher Jeff Jacobs (sr. Old Bridge, NJ/St. John Vianney) took the loss, allowing eight runs, five earned on nine hits in five innings pitched.
Rowan jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the second and three in the fourth. Grant hit a RBI double in the second. In the fourth, Benak smacked a run scoring double and center fielder Eric Perez (sr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) and Sellitto scored unearned runs. Dertouzos made the score
4-1 with a RBI single in the fifth. The Profs broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, with a four spot. Grimes scored Pavlik on a double. Sellitto then plated two runs with a single and scored on an error for an 8-1 advantage.
The Devils scored four unanswered runs to cut the deficit to 8-5 heading to the bottom of the eighth. LaGuarina singled in two runs in the sixth and doubled home a run in the eighth. He then scored on a wild pitch. Rowan got those runs back in its half of the inning as Kreiger and Pavlik each hit RBI triples and Grimes knocked in Pavlik with a double.
Rowan will play SUNY Oneonta in Lakeland, FL on Monday at 9:00 a.m.
