Baseball Takes Two At Montclair State University, 3-2 and 7-6

MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won two conference games, 3-2 and  7-6 at Montclair State University on Saturday. 

The Profs are 24-10 overall and 9-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Red Hawks have a 12-15-1 record with a 4-9-1 conference mark. 

In the opener, right-hander Steven Melchiorre (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) was the winning pitcher.  He (4-3) went 8.1 innings and gave up two earned runs.  Melchiorre struck out 10 batters.  Righty Patrick D’Ascenzo (so. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) was on the mound for the final two outs and a save.  Left-hander Dylan Papa (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) took the loss.  He (2-4) allowed seven hits and three earned runs.

Profs’ first baseman Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) was two for four with a home run.  Catcher Stephen Petriello (fr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs.  Right fielder Eric Sellitto (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had two hits in four at bats.  Center fielder Eric Perez (jr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) added one hit and one run scored.  Shortstop Ryan Williams (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) scored one run. 

For the Red Hawks, first baseman Stephen Nappe (sr. Edison, NJ/Edison) went three for four with a home run and two runs scored.  Designated hitter Anderson Rosa (so. Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) produced two hits (four at bats) and one run scored.  Center fielder Jose Carlos Padilla (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) added two hits.

In the fourth inning, MSU tied the score at two with a RBI single by Rosa.  Kelly led off the sixth with home run, which was the winning run of the game.  It was his third home run on the season. 

The Red Hawks scored first in the second inning with a homer by Nappe.  Rowan took the lead (2-1) in the third.  Petriello knocked in Perez and Williams with a single.   

Right-hander Jeff White (sr. Medford, NJ/Sterling) had the win in the nightcap.  He (5-0) went 7.1 innings and allowed four earned runs.  D’Ascenzo earned his fifth save of the year.  Right-hander Jake Campbell (sr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville) had the loss on the mound.  He (0-2) gave up 11 hits and six runs, one earned.

Williams went two for four with a double, two RBIs and one run scored.  Kelly registered two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Sellitto was two for four with one RBI.  Perez contributed with two hits (three at bats) and one run scored.  Designated hitter Casey Grimes (so. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) chipped in with one hit, two RBIs and one run scored.  Second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) added two hits and scored one run.  Left fielder Nick Kreiger (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) collected two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.

Padilla was two for four with two runs scored.  Right fielder Timothy Byron (jr. East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) produced a triple and two RBIs.  Third baseman Connor Abreu (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) totaled two hits (five at bats), a double, one RBI and one run scored.  Nappe had a double and one RBI.  Second baseman Lou Martini (jr. Flemington, NJ/North Hunterdon) registered one double and two RBIs. 

The game was scoreless after five innings.  All seven of Rowan’s runs came in the sixth.  Kelly had a RBI single, scoring Grimes.  Sellitto’s base hit through the left side sent Kelly home.  Williams knocked in two runs with a double to center field.  Kreiger had a single to center field and Williams crossed the plate.  Grimes drove in two runs with a single through the left side.

MSU followed with two runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.  With two outs, Byron tripled in the two runs in the ninth.  The Red Hawks trailed by one (7-6).  D’Ascenzo came in the game for the third out, which was a ground out to Williams.      

Rowan has a rescheduled game at York College (PA) on Monday, April 22 at 4 p.m.
