NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The fourth seed Rowan University had a 9-6 victory over the sixth seed Messiah College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Newport News Regional on Thursday afternoon. The game was played at Captains Park on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
The remainder of the double elimination tournament continues on Friday-Saturday, May 18-19. On Friday, Rowan (31-14) plays top seeded Christopher Newport (31-8) at 1 p.m. Prior, Messiah (20-24) faces the second seed Salisbury University (32-8). The third seed Shenandoah University (31-11) takes on the winner of the 9 a.m. contest at 4:30 p.m.
In the first game on Thursday, Christopher Newport eliminated the fifth seed Lynchburg College (34-10), 7-1. Shenandoah topped Salisbury, 6-1. The winners of the eight regional tournaments move on to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 25-29 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.
Left-hander Curtis Arsi (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) pitched 7.2 innings for the win. He (2-2) allowed six runs, two earned on nine hits. Arsi struck out seven batters. Right-hander Ryan Easterday (fr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) tossed the final 1.1 innings for his first career save. Lefty Wes Hollenbach (sr. Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) took the loss. He (4-2) surrendered six earned runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings.
The Profs’ offense was led by shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) with three hits (three at bats), three runs scored, one RBI and two doubles. Left fielder Eric Perez (so. Hopelawn, NJ/Woodbridge) went three for three with one run scored. First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) compiled three hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) produced two hits (five at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a double.
Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainsfield, NJ/South Plainsfield) was two for four with one run scored. Designated hitter Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) added one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) tallied two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) drove in one run. Center fielder Nick Kreiger (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) chipped in with one hit (five at bats) and one RBI.
For the Falcons, shortstop John Brubaker (sr. Lancaster, PA/Living Word Academy) went three for four with two runs scored, one RBI and a double. First baseman Jacob Sprengle (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) registered two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Third baseman Jon Lapp (so. Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) and catcher Ryan Brown (sr. Telford, PA/Souderton) both had one hit and one run scored. Center fielder Jon Heisey (fr. Mt. Joy, PA/Donegal) collected one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Derek Drake (fr. Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) scored once.
Rowan took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Benak singled up the middle. He moved to second on a walk by Magliaro. Turano ripped a single to right center field allowing Benak to score. After McMenamin walked, Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Magliaro. McMenamin stole second base and Turano came home on the throw.
Messiah tied the game (3-3) in the second. Brubaker led off with a double to right center field. Drake followed with a walk and Sprengle had a bunt single to load the bases. Heisey reached first on a fielder’s choice and Brubaker came home. Drake and Heisey both scored on errors.
The Profs pulled ahead, 4-3 with one run in the third. Magliaro started the inning with a double down the right field line. He advanced to third on a bunt single by Turano. Magliaro came in when McMenamin grounded into a double play. Rowan added two runs in the fifth to extend the lead to three (6-3). Magliaro doubled to right field and stole third. He crossed the plate on McMenamin’s single to left field. Kelly and Perez had back-to-back singles to load the bases. With two outs, Kreiger singled off the pitcher, knocking in McMenamin.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kelly and Perez each had a base hit. Hill doubled to right center field, driving in Kelly. With one out, Winkler hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing in Perez. Magliaro’s single to center field allowed Hill to score. The Falcons pulled within three (9-6) with three runs in the eighth. Lapp led off with a single to third base. He moved to second on a base hit by Brown. With two outs, Brubaker singled up the middle and Lapp scored. Drake reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Sprengle singled to right center field bringing in Brubaker and Brown.
