JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won two conference games, 8-7 and 9-5 at New Jersey City University on Saturday.
The Profs are 24-11 overall and 8-6 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). This week, Rowan is ranked 22nd in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Poll. The Gothic Knights drop to 12-22 on the season and 1-13 in the conference.
In the opener, right-hander Ryan Peterson (sr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) had the win in relief. Peterson (5-1) threw 1.1 innings and gave up one unearned run on four hits. Righty Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) recorded the save. He pitched the final inning. Right-hander Kevin DeMauro (fr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took the loss. He (2-3) allowed two hits and one earned run in 1.2 innings.
The Profs tied the score at seven with one run in the top of the eighth inning. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) reached base on an error and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield). Winkler advanced to third on Magliaro’s single then came home on an error. Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) plated pinch runner Scott Bruno (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) for the winning run in the ninth. First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) led off with a double and was replaced by Bruno.
Hill ended the game with four hits (four at bats), two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Designated hitter Kevin McMenamin (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) went three for five with a double and two runs scored. Center fielder Nick Kreiger (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) contributed with one hit (four at bats) and two RBIs. Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) added one hit and one run scored.
For NJCU, shortstop Michael Martucci (fr. Bayonne, NJ/Saint Peter’s Prep) went three for five with one run scored. Third baseman Brian Bustillo (jr. Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) collected two hits (five at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Right fielder Matthew Wagner (fr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) produced two hits, one double, one RBI and one run scored. First baseman Alex Weinstein (fr. Colonia, NJ/John F. Kennedy-Iselin) and left fielder Andrew Rivera (jr. Edison, NJ/Edison) each had one hit and one RBI. Rivera also scored one run. Second baseman Juan Cruz (fr. Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary’s) totaled two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
Rowan had one run in the seventh inning for a 6-1 lead. Hill posted a sacrifice fly that scored Turano. The Gothic Knights went ahead 7-6 with six runs in the bottom half. Weinstein, Rivera and Cruz all tallied a RBI single. Rivera came home on an error and Bustillo knocked in two runs with a single to left field.
Left-hander Kyle Brown (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) earned the win in the nightcap. He (3-1) pitched 5.1 scoreless innings in relief. Brown scattered three hits and had five strikeouts. Magliaro threw the final inning for his third save. Lefty Pedro Garcia (jr. North Bergen, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) was the losing pitcher. In 3.1 innings, he (0-4) allowed four earned runs on seven hits.
Winkler paced the Profs with three hits (five at bats), one double, a home run and two runs scored. Magliaro went two for five with two RBIs, a triple and one run scored. Turano chipped in with two hits, two RBIs, a homer and two runs scored. McMenamin tallied three hits in four at bats and scored one run. Center fielder Felix Colarte (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) recorded a home run and three RBIs.
Gothic Knights’ center fielder Michael Patterson (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) went three for five with two RBIs and one run scored. Wagner contributed with two hits in four trips to the plate. Cruz had two hits in three at bats and one run scored. Weinstein recorded a solo home run.
Rowan got on the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning. New Jersey City tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the second. Hill’s sacrifice fly scored Turano in the third inning for a 4-3 advantage. The Profs added one run in the sixth with a RBI single by Magliaro. Rowan tacked on four runs in the seventh to lead 9-3. Colarte recorded a three-run homer to left field and Winkler posted a solo shot. NJCU had its last two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Next week, Rowan plays at NJAC opponent Rutgers-Camden on Thursday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m.
