Rowan Sweeps Doubleheader Over Franklin & Marshall, 6-3 and 8-3

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team swept a doubleheader over Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday afternoon.  The game scores were 6-3 and 8-3 in seven innings.

Rowan improves to 6-0 on the season.  The Profs are ranked 25th in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 Poll and 27th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Poll.  Franklin & Marshall has a 2-3 record.

In the first game, right-hander Steven Melchiorre (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) was the winning pitcher (2-0).  He allowed one earned run and six hits in six innings.  Melchiorre struck out four hitters.  Righty Ryan Peterson (sr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) tossed the final 0.2 innings for his first save of the season.  Left-hander Evan Lang (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) took the loss (1-1).  He surrendered five unearned runs in four innings.

Rowan shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) went one for four with two runs scored.  Right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) posted one hit (three at bats) and two RBIs.  Designated hitter Danny Lang (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) was one for four with one run scored and a double.  First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) produced one hit (four at bats) and one RBI.  Third baseman Rich Powelson (fr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) and second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) contributed with one hit and one run scored apiece.

For Franklin & Marshall, third baseman Will Benenson (so. Upper Montclair, NJ/Dwight Englewood) was two for four with three RBIs.  Second baseman Aaron Gillette (jr. Owings Mills, MD/Beth Tfiloh) and first baseman J.T. Triantos (sr. Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) both registered one hit (four at bats) and one run scored.  Designated hitter Connor Devlin (sr. Irvington, NY/The Masters School) and catcher Josh Mendelson (jr. Orangeburg, NY/Pearl River) each posted two hits in three trips to the plate.  Shortstop Alex Vescera (jr. Cranston, RI/Bishop Hendricken) scored once.

The Profs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.  With one out, Magliaro and Lang both singled.  They moved to second and third on a ground out.  Turano hit a ball to right field that was dropped, scoring Magliaro and Lang.  The Diplomats cut the deficit to one (2-1) with one run in the fourth.  Triantos got on base on an error.  Devlin followed with a single.  Benenson’s single to left field plated Triantos.  In the bottom half, Lang was hit by a pitch with the bases load bringing in Powelson.  Hill ripped a single to center field allowing Magliaro and Winkler to come home.

Franklin & Marshall got one run in the fifth to make the score, 5-2.  Gillette crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to center field by Benenson.  Rowan added an insurance run in the seventh.  Turano doubled to left field.  He scored on Kelly’s single to right field.  The Diplomats’ final run came in the top of the ninth.  Vescera walked and Gillette followed with a single.  Triantos’ ground out moved the runners to second and third.  After a walk by Devlin, Benenson reached first on an error, which brought in Vescera.

In the nightcap, right-hander Andrew Lysy (fr. Allentown, NJ/Allentown) earned the win (2-0).  He gave up one earned run in four innings.  Lysy struck out four hitters.  Righty Brian Rice (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) threw the final 1.2 innings for the save.  Right-hander Brendan DeMond (jr. Wilton, CT/St. Luke’s) took the loss.  He allowed seven earned runs in 4.1 innings.

For the Profs, Hill went one for three with two RBIs, one run scored and a double.  Second baseman Rob Wilgus (sr. Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) chipped in with two hits (three at bats) and one run scored.  Catcher C.J. Szymczak (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) posted one hit (two at bats) and two RBIs.  Center fielder Felix Colarte (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) went one for two with two runs scored.  Left fielder Nate Floyd (jr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) added one hit (four at bats) and two RBIs.  Turano contributed with one hit (one at bat) and one run scored.  Magliaro drove in one run.

Gillette recorded two hits (four at bats) and one RBI for the Diplomats.  Benenson compiled one hit (four at bats) and one run scored.  Left fielder Avery Attinson (so. Montclair, NJ/Montclair) collected one hit (three at bats) and one run scored.  Center fielder Brian Erb (fr. Trooper, PA/Germantown Academy) was one for three with one RBI and one run scored.  Vescera had one hit (three at bats) and one RBI.

Franklin & Marshall went up, 1-0 in the top of the second inning.  With two outs, Gillette ripped a single up the middle that scored Erb from third.  Rowan took a 4-1 lead with four runs in the third.  Hill doubled to right center field scoring Wilgus and Benak.  Szymczak was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Hill came home.  Floyd’s single plated Colarte.

The Profs tacked on three runs in the fifth for a 7-1 advantage.  With the bases loaded, Floyd reached first on an error and Perez scored.  Wilgus drove in Colarte with an infield single.  Turano crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to left field by Magliaro.  In the top of the sixth, Benenson had a leadoff single.  Attinson and catcher Patrick Andrews (so. Titusville, NJ/The Hun School) each drew a walk.  Erb hit a single to right field, bringing in Benenson.  Vescera hit into a fielder’s choice and Attinson came home.  In the bottom half, Szymczak singled up the middle allowing Perez to score from third.

Rowan hosts Johns Hopkins University in a nonconference game on Tuesday, March 6 at 3 p.m.
