DEMOREST, GA – The seventh ranked Piedmont College baseball team edged Rowan University, 5-4 on Thursday night. It was first loss for the sixth ranked Profs now 10-1 on the season.
The Lions have a 14-4 record. Reliever Matt Lisk was the winning pitcher. He (3-1) threw three innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. Ed Cooke pitched two scoreless innings for his sixth save. Right-hander Ryan Peterson (sr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) took the loss. In 1.1 innings, Peterson (1-1) gave up one hit and one unearned run.
For Piedmont, designated hitter Kevin D’Antignac contributed with one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Garrett Lovelace and second baseman Tim Nunez each went one for four with one RBI. Both players had a double. Center fielder Tate Koons contributed with two hits in four trips to the plate while shortstop Matt Youtsey had one hit (four at bats). Left fielder Kyle Davis and first baseman Curtis Cornett added one hit and scored one run apiece. Right fielder Josh Bailey and pinch runner Brad Stinson both scored one run.
Rowan right fielder Matt Hill (sr. Robbinsville, NJ/Hamilton Square) went two for four with a double and one RBI. Catcher Nick Turano (sr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) produced a double and one RBI. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) collected two hits (five at bats) and scored one run. Third baseman Mark Benak (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had one hit in two at bats and one run scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (sr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) scored two runs. First baseman Sean Kelly (jr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) added one hit and left fielder Nick Kreiger (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) chipped in with one RBI.
The Profs tied the score at three with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Benak and Winkler had back-to-back walks. Magliaro reached first with a bunt single. Benak came home on a ground out double play and Winkler scored on Hill’s single. Rowan went ahead 4-3 in the seventh. Winkler walked and advanced to third on a single to center field by Magliaro. Kreiger had a sac bunt and Winkler crossed the plate. In the bottom half, the Lions took the lead with two runs. Lovelace recorded a double down the left field line and was replaced by Stinson. D'Antignac reached base on an error and Stinson came home. The winning run was scored by D'Antignac on an error.
Rowan got on the scoreboard in the first inning with a RBI double by Turano. He knocked in Magliaro. Piedmont followed with three runs in the bottom of the first.
The baseball team plays number one ranked Marietta College on Friday, March 16 at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Piedmont College.
