Alvernia Beats Rowan, 11-4 in Secound Round of NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional

LAKEWOOD, NJ – Third seeded Alvernia University had an 11-4 victory over the second seed Rowan University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday morning. The tournament is being held at FirstEnergy Park.

Later on Friday, Alvernia (37-7) will play the fourth seed Misericordia University (30-14) at 6:45 p.m. Prior, the sixth seed Johns Hopkins University (26-12) takes on the eighth seed Catholic University (23-20) at 12:55 p.m. and Rowan (31-12-1) faces top seeded Kean University (37-9) at 3:30 p.m.

In the second round games on Thursday, May 19, Kean eliminated the fifth seed Messiah College, 6-0. Johns Hopkins knocked out the seventh seed Randolph-Macon College, 8-5, while Misericordia University had 4-0 shutout over Catholic. The regional tournament is double elimination. The winner advances to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Friday-Tuesday, May 27-31 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.

Right-hander Chuck Nicholas (sr. Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) went eight innings for the win. He (7-3) allowed four runs, one earned on five hits. Nicholas struck out six batters. Righty Mike Swietanski (sr. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) took the loss. He (7-2) gave up seven runs, six earned on nine hits in 7.2 innings.

Alvernia right fielder Brian Witkowski (so. Ewing, NJ/Notre Dame) went three for five with four RBIs, one run scored and a double. Left fielder Travis Wrambel (jr. Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) posted two hits (three at bats), four RBIs, one run scored and two doubles. Shortstop Reid Martin (sr. Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) collected three hits (five at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double.

Center fielder Leon Stimpson (so. Philadelphia, PA/Malvern Prep) registered one hit (three at bats), three runs scored and one RBI. Designated hitter Chris Ray (so. Exton, PA/Henderson) was one for three with one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Matt O’Neill (jr. West Chester, PA/Henderson) scored twice, while second baseman Tim Ahlquist (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) crossed the plate once.

For Rowan, shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) produced two hits (five at bats) and one run scored. Third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) contributed with one RBI and one run scored. Catcher C.J. Szymczak (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) and second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) both had one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Designated hitter Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) added one hit in four trips to the plate and one RBI.

Alvernia went ahead, 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Stimpson and Witkowski had back-to-back singles to start the game. Ray was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wrambel walked and Stimpson scored. In the bottom half, Magliaro got on with a single through the right side. Woodend reached first on an error. The runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.). Turano hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Magliaro. Woodend crossed the plate on a two base error.

Rowan increased the lead to 4-1 with two runs in the second. With one out, Szymczak singled up the middle. Winkler was hit by a pitch and Magliaro’s single loaded the bases. Woodend hit into a fielder’s choice that knocked in Szymczak. Winkler came home on a throwing error. Alvernia recorded two runs in the top of the fourth to trail by one (4-3). Martin ripped a leadoff double into right center field. O’Neill was hit by a pitch and the runners went to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Ahlquist. Martin scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Stimpson. Witkowski followed with a single through the right side that drove in O’Neill.

The Crusaders tied the game (4-4) with one run in the fifth. Wrambel walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Aaron Carman (jr. Robesonia, PA/Conrad Weiser). First baseman Eric Domitrovits (jr. Northampton, PA/Northampton) reached on a fielder’s choice and Wrambel moved to third. He was knocked in by Martin’s single through the left side of the infield.

In the top of the eighth, Alvernia tallied four runs to go up, 8-4. Martin led off with a single. With two outs, Stimpson and Witkowski walked to load the bases. Ray drew a walk allowing Martin to cross the plate. Wrambel hit a three run double to left center field, driving in Stimpson, Witkowski and Ray. The Crusaders added three runs in the ninth. Witkowski ripped a triple down the right field line that scored O’Neill, Ahlquist and Stimpson.
