Rowan Sweeps Doubleheader Over New Jersey City, 5-2 and 13-3

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team swept a doubleheader over conference opponent New Jersey City University, 5-2 and 13-3 on Monday afternoon.

The Profs improve to 24-8-1 overall and 11-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Rowan is ranked 23rd in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll. The Gothic Knights have a 6-26 record with a 1-13 NJAC mark.

In the first game, right-hander Steven Melchiorre (so. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) was the winning pitcher (5-0). He threw eight innings, allowing two earned runs on 12 hits. Melchiorre struck out six hitters. Righty John O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) tossed a scoreless ninth for his seventh save of the season. Right-hander Jeff Karczewski (sr. Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton W.) took the loss (0-5). He surrendered five runs, four earned on seven hits in eight innings.

Right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) paced the Profs’ offense with two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was one for three with two RBIs. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (sr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) compiled one hit (three at bats), one run scored and a double. First baseman Matt Hill (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Robbinsville) added one hit (three at bats) and one RBI, while second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) had one hit (two at bats) and one run scored.

For New Jersey City, right fielder Jorge Gutierrez (sr. Sewaren, NJ/Hudson Catholic) produced three hits (four at bats), two runs scored and a double. First baseman Thomas Lacik (so. Edison, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) was two for four with one RBI. Left fielder Andrew Rivera (so. Edison, NJ/Edison) chipped in with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI.

Rowan took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Magliaro led off with a double to left field. He moved to third on a fly out and scored on Weaver’s ground out. New Jersey City tied the game (1-1) in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Rivera reached on a fielder’s choice and Gutierrez came home.

The Profs tacked on two runs in the third for a 3-1 advantage. Woodend singled, knocking in Winkler from third. Citro crossed the plate on an error. In the top of the sixth, Lacik’s single through the right side brought Gutierrez home. In the bottom half, O’Brien walked and later scored on a single to right field by Hill. Rowan added one run in the seventh. Citro was hit by a pitch and he stole second. He moved to third on a fly out by Magliaro and came home on Woodend’s sacrifice fly to center field.

In the nightcap, right-hander Kyle Norman (sr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) earned the win in relief (3-1). He tossed a scoreless fifth inning. Lefty Mark Porter (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Lower Merion (PA)) pitched the first four innings, surrendering five hits and no runs. Right-hander T.J. Janho (fr. Somerset, NJ/Timothy Christian) pitched 2.2 innings for the loss (2-3). He allowed six runs, one earned on five hits.

O’Brien went two for three with two RBIs, one run scored and a triple. Center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) posted two hits (two at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a homer. Magliaro chipped in with two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Designated hitter Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) registered two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Pinch hitter/right fielder Nate Floyd (jr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) was two for two with one RBI and a double.

Second baseman Rob Wilgus (jr. Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) tallied one hit (three at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) and catcher C.J. Szymczak (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) both had one hit, one run scored and one RBI.

For the Gothic Knights, second baseman Christopher Mirabile (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) went five for five with one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Rob Gonzalez (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) followed with two hits (five at bats) and one run scored. Third baseman Michael Fiorentino (sr. Pt. Pleasant Beach, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Beach) was one for three with one RBI. Rivera scored once.

The Profs broke the game open with 10 runs in the third inning. Woodend walked and later scored on an error. Weaver’s single plated Szymczak. After a single by Hill, Weaver came home on a wild pitch. Wilgus drove in Hill with a single and Citro hit a two run shot over the right center field fence. Turano’s single knocked in Magliaro and O’Brien followed with a two run triple. Szymczak added a RBI single.

Rowan tallied one run in the fourth and two in the sixth to go ahead, 13-0. Magliaro’s single in the fourth drove in Citro. In the sixth, Wilgus came home on a fielder’s choice and Floyd’s single plated pinch hitter/shortstop Mark Benak (fr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield). New Jersey City recorded two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth. Rivera walked in the seventh. He scored when Rowan attempted to throw out Gonzalez on a steal. Mirabile’s single through the right side drove in Gonzalez. In the ninth, Fiorentino hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Mirabile scored.

Rowan hosts Widener University in a nonconference game on Wednesday, April 27 at 3:30 p.m.
