POMONA, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won 6-1 at Richard Stockton College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday.
Right-hander Mike Swietanski (sr. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) was the winning pitcher. He (4-1) had a no-hitter until the eighth inning. Swietanski only gave up one hit and one earned run in eight innings. He struck out six batters. Righty Todd Burdette (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) was on the mound for the final inning. Left-hander Adam Warburton (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) took the loss. He (4-2) threw seven innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs.
Rowan has an 18-6-1 record with a 6-1 NJAC mark. Richard Stockton is 16-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference. Catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) was two for five with two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) contributed with three hits (five at bats) and scored one run. First baseman Eric Newell (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) produced two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.
Center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) added one hit in three trips to the plate and two RBIs. Third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) chipped in with one hit and one run scored. Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) and right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) each scored one run. For the Ospreys, first baseman Mike Wasco (jr. Riverside, NJ/Riverside) had one hit in three at bats and one run scored.
The Profs got on the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning. Magliaro led off with a single to left center and he went to second on a sac bunt by second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI). Weaver was hit by a pitch. Magliaro moved to third and Weaver advanced to second on a wild pitch. Turano knocked in both of them with a single to left center field. Newell plated Turano with a single.
Rowan led 4-0 after scoring one run in the fifth. With one out, O’Brien reached base with a walk. He stole second and crossed the plate on Newell’s hit. In the top of the eighth, the Profs had two more runs. Citro recorded a two RBI single to right field that brought home Woodend and Newell. In the bottom half, Richard Stockton had its lone run. Wasco had a single and advanced to second on a balk. He moved to third on a ground out and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
