GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won its home opener, 6-2 over Franklin & Marshall College in a nonconference game on Friday afternoon.
The Profs improve to 3-1 overall, while the Diplomats have a 0-2 record. Left-hander Curtis Arsi (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) pitched four shutout innings in relief for the win (1-0). He struck out three hitters. Righty Steven Melchiorre (so. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) started the game. He went five innings, allowing one earned run on two hits. Right-hander Tom Caramanico (sr. Haverford, PA/William Penn Charter) took the loss (0-1).
Rowan shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) was one for four with two runs scored. Catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) posted one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) added one hit (two at bats) and one run scored. He also stole two bases. Left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) scored twice, while center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) contributed with one run scored and one RBI.
For the Diplomats, first baseman J.T. Triantos (jr. Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) went one for four with one run scored and one RBI. Right fielder Eric Bornstein (sr. Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) had one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Shortstop Matt Will (sr. Oreland, PA/Upper Dublin) crossed the plate once.
Franklin & Marshall went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Triantos singled through the left side. Designated hitter Blue Wells (jr. Glencoe, IL/New Trier) walked and Bornstein followed with a RBI single to center field that scored Triantos. Rowan tied the game in the bottom of the second. Magliaro reached first on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Winkler’s line drive to center field was mishandled and Magliaro came home.
In the top of the third, Will reached first on an error and moved to second on a passed ball. He advanced to third and scored on back-to-back ground outs. In the bottom half, Weaver was hit by a pitched and stole second. With two outs, Turano ripped a single to left field that plated Weaver.
Rowan broke the 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Magliaro led off with a single to left field and Winkler was hit by a pitch. Magliaro went to third on a passed ball and Winkler stole second on the next pitch. Citro got on base on an error bringing Magliaro home and moving Winkler to third. Citro stole second base.
Winkler came home on a wild pitch and Citro crossed the plate on a throwing error by the catcher. Weaver and O’Brien had consecutive walks. They each advanced one base because of an obstruction call. A wild pitch allowed Weaver to score and O’Brien went to third.
