AUBURNDALE, FL – The FDU-Florham baseball team had an 8-6 victory over Rowan University at the RussMatt Central Florida Tournament on Thursday. The game was played at Lake Myrtle Park Main Field.
The Devils improve to 5-3, while the Profs have a 6-4 record. Pitcher Fred Luchetti (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) earned the win (1-0). He tossed 7.2 innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out seven hitters. Pitcher Chris Laudati (jr. Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearly) threw the final inning for his second save of the year. Right-hander John Harvey (sr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) took the loss (0-1). He surrendered four earned runs in 2.1 innings of relief.
Center fielder Matt Oliveto (sr. Union, NJ/Union Catholic) led FDU-Florham with four hits (five at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Shortstop Steve Seminerio (jr. East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) went three for six with one runs scored and a double. Right fielder Nick Core (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) added two hits (six at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.
Third baseman John Pieper (jr. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) was one for three with two runs scored. Designated hitter Matt Joiner (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) and left fielder Ryan Kalish (sr. Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson) contributed with one hit (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored apiece. First baseman Ryan Fandel (jr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) compiled two hits (five at bats) and one RBI.
For Rowan, second baseman Brandon Winkler (jr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) posted three hits (four at bats), two runs scored and a double. Catcher Nick Turano (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) went three for five with two RBIs, one run scored, a double and a triple. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) chipped in with three hits (five at bats) and one run scored. Right fielder Kevin O’Brien (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced one hit (five at bats) and two RBIs. Center fielder Matt Citro (sr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) tallied one RBI and one run scored, while left fielder Scott Weaver (sr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) scored once.
The Profs jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring four runs in the first inning and one in the second. Magliaro led off the first with a single and Winkler followed with a double. Turano’s triple knocked both of them in. Turano came home on a ground out by O’Brien. With the bases loaded, Citro was hit by a pitch, scoring Weaver, who got on with a walk. In the second, O’Brien hit a RBI single and Winkler crossed the plate.
The Devils answered with two runs in the top of the third inning. Pieper singled and moved to third on a double by Oliveto. Core followed with a two run single. FDU-Florham got four runs in the fourth to go ahead, 6-5. Seminerio hit a leadoff single and Pieper walked. Oliveto ripped a single that brought Seminerio home. Core singled to load the bases and Pieper scored on a wild pitch. Joiner’s ground out drove in Oliveto and Fandel’s single plated Core.
In the top of the sixth, Joiner hit a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Kalish’s single allowed Joiner to score. Kalish later came home on an error. Rowan had one run in the bottom of the eighth. Citro walked and stole second. Magliaro’s single moved Citro to third. Winkler walked to load the bases and Citro scored on an error with Turano at bat.
Rowan concludes its spring break trip with a doubleheader against Keystone College on Friday, March 18. The games will be played at Chain of Lakes Park Field #1 in Winter Haven, FL beginning at 9:30 a.m.
