GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team scored four runs in the eighth inning for a 10-7 win over Richard Stockton College in the second round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament on Thursday.
The Profs, the top seed, will host the remaining rounds of the conference tournament on Saturday and Sunday, May 8 and 9. On Saturday, Rowan (24-13-1) will play the fourth seed The College of New Jersey (21-18) at noon. Prior at 8 a.m., the second seed Kean University (30-10) meets the sixth seed Montclair State University (21-16). In the 4 p.m. game, the loser of the Kean/Montclair State game faces the winner of the Rowan/TCNJ game.
In the other second round games, Montclair State knocked out the third seed Rutgers-Newark with a 13-10 win and Kean defeated TCNJ, 6-1. Richard Stockton (19-19) was the fifth seed in the NJAC tournament.
Right-hander Ryan Peterson (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) was the winning pitcher in relief. Peterson (5-1) threw 1.1 innings and gave up one run. Lefty Michael Cox (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) was on the mound for the last two outs and earned his first save. Right-hander Mark Crescenzi (so. Pedricktown, NJ/Pennsgrove) took the loss.
Profs’ right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) contributed with three hits (three at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and two triples. Second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) totaled three hits in four at bats, one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Blomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) chipped in with three RBIs. Designated hitter Kevin O’Brien (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) registered two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) each had one hit and scored two runs.
For the Ospreys, first baseman Mike Wasco (so. Riverside, NJ/Riverside) was two for two at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI. Shortstop Matt Allen (sr. Salem, NJ/Woodstown) and catcher Nick Scalise (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) both contributed with two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Chris Discher (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) and second baseman Jason Gordon (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) added one hit and one RBI apiece. Left fielder Barry Larro (fr. Cedarville, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) had one RBI while designated hitter Marc Asta (so. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) tallied a double and one run scored.
The score was tied at six going into the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Marsch singled to left field and O’Brien reached base on an error. After the second out, Magliaro’s walk loaded the bases. Woodend walked to score Marsch and Citro followed with a two RBI single, scoring O’Brien and Magliaro. Lenig plated Woodend with a single. Stockton’s final run came in the ninth. Wasco started the inning and was hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a wild pitch. Scalise was hit by a pitch and Gordon walked to load the bases. Discher got on with a fielder’s choice and Wasco crossed the plate.
The Ospreys got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the second inning. Scalise plated Asta with a single and Wasco came home on an error. The Profs answered with one run in the bottom half. O’Brien had a RBI single, scoring catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan).
In the third, Allen crossed the plate on Wasco’s sacrifice fly. Rowan took the lead (5-3) with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Citro and Turano each had a sac fly and Marsch tripled in two runs. Richard Stockton came back with two runs in the fourth that tied the game (5-5). With the bases loaded, Allen was hit by a pitch and Scalise scored. Larro followed with a walk that brought home Discher.
The Profs went up 6-5 in the sixth inning. Marsch recorded his second triple and O’Brien followed with a RBI single. In the top of the seventh, the Ospreys tied the game with a RBI single by Gordon.
On Tuesday in the first round, Montclair State edged Rowan, 3-2 in 11 innings. Kean won 8-7 over Richard Stockton while TCNJ defeated Rutgers-Newark 11-9. The conference tournament is double elimination. The NJAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
