Rowan Tops Widener, 11-5 in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Championships Tournament

TRENTON, NJ – Sixth seeded Rowan University defeated the third seed Widener University, 11-5 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Wednesday. The first round tournament is being held at Waterfront Park.

Rowan (25-14-1) plays the winner of tonight’s game between second seeded Kean University and the seventh seed Manhattanville College on Thursday, May 20 at 7:45 p.m. Widener (25-13) takes on the loser of the Kean/Manhattanville contest at 1:15 p.m. Also on Thursday, the fourth seed Alvernia University (32-11) faces eighth seeded Moravian College (26-14) at 10 a.m. and the fifth seed Keystone College (30-7) plays the top seed Johns Hopkins University (40-4).

Earlier on Wednesday, Keystone defeated Alvernia, 13-3. Johns Hopkins had a 13-4 victory over Moravian. The Kean/Manhattanville game is scheduled to start at 9:05 p.m. The first round tournament is double elimination. The winner at Trenton will advance to the finals of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Friday, May 28-Sunday, June 1 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.

Profs’ right-hander Mike Swietanski (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five runs for the win. He (4-0) struck out six hitters. Left-hander Jason Ferrie (so. Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) took the loss. He (8-3) gave up eight earned runs in six innings.

Rowan right fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) went four for five with three RBIs and one run scored. First baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had two hits (four at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a home run. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) chipped in with two hits (five at bats) and two runs scored. Third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) added two hits (five at bats), one run scored and one RBI. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) posted two hits (five at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced one hit in three trips to the plate, two RBIs and one run scored.

Pride right fielder Tom DeAngelis (jr. Pottstown, PA/St. Pius X) was three for five with two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Left fielder Dan Sieracki (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace) recorded three hits (three at bats), three RBIs and a double. Shortstop Tom Mahoney (jr. Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) scored once. Center fielder Mike Villari (sr. Holland, PA/LaSalle College) had two hits (four at bats) and one run scored.

In the top of the first inning, left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) reached base on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on catcher Nick Turano’s (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) single. Marsch drove in Weaver with a single to right field. In the bottom half, DeAngelis led off with a single and advanced to third on a passed ball. Sieracki ripped a double to left center field, scoring DeAngelis.

Rowan added five runs in the second inning to go ahead, 6-1. Johanson started the inning with a walk. Magliaro and Woodend followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Citro ripped a single through the right side plating Johanson and Magliaro. Lenig followed with a single that brought Woodend home. Marsch singled up the middle, scoring Lenig and Citro. Johanson hit a solo homer over the left field fence to lead off the third. Widener recorded two runs in the bottom of the inning to pull within four (7-3). DeAngelis doubled down the left field line and he went to third on a single by second baseman Alex Oliver (jr. Lebanon, NJ/Raritan Valley). Saverio walked to load the bases. Sieracki was hit by a pitch and DeAngelis crossed the plate. Oliver came home on third baseman Tom Connelly’s (sr. Media, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) sacrifice fly to right field.

The Profs scored one run in the top of the sixth for an 8-3 lead. Magliaro reached first on an error and advanced to second on the throw. He moved to third on a single by Citro. Lenig hit a sacrifice fly to right field that knocked in Magliaro. The Pride got two runs in the bottom half to cut the deficit to three (8-5). Mahoney walked and Villari followed with a single. The runners both advanced one base on an error. Mahoney came home on a ground out by DeAngelis. After a single by catcher Sean Saverio (so. Horsham, PA/LaSalle U.), Sieracki drove in Villari with a single through the left side.

In the seventh, Turano reached first on an error and Marsch followed with a single. Designated hitter Kevin O’Brien (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) hit a two-run single up the middle and Woodend added a RBI single.
