JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team closed out the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent New Jersey City University. The Profs won with game scores of 14-9 and 7-3.
Rowan improves to 23-12-1 overall and 14-4 in the conference. The Profs are the top seed in the NJAC Championship Tournament and will host first and second round games on Tuesday, May 4 and Thursday, May 6 respectively. New Jersey City has a 13-24 record with a 2-16 NJAC mark.
In the first game, right-hander Mike Swietanski (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six earned runs for the win (3-0). Righty Ryan Peterson (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) threw 3.1 innings in relief for his third save. Right-hander Jeff Karczewski (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton W.) took the loss. He (4-2) surrendered five earned runs in five innings.
Profs’ right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) went three for four with two runs scored, one RBI and a home run. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) totaled two hits (five at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a homer. Catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) was three for five with three RBIs and two runs scored. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) compiled three hits (six at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double.
Second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) contributed with two hits (six at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Designated hitter Kevin O’Brien (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced one hit (three at bats), three runs scored and one RBI. First baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) posted two hits (five at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and two doubles. Third baseman Mike Scott (jr. Lafayette, NJ/High Point Reg.) registered one hit, one run scored and one RBI, while shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) drove in one run with one hit.
For the Gothic Knights, shortstop/pitcher Tom Burke (jr. Edison, NJ/Immaculata) went two for four with three RBIs, one run scored and a double. Catcher Francisco Ramirez (so. Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) added two hits (five at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Designated hitter Alex Mena (sr. North Bergen, NJ/Hudson Catholic) chipped in with one hit and two runs scored. Right fielder Jorge Gutierrez (jr. Sewaren, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was three for five with one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Ken Witte (jr. Wantage, NJ/High Point Reg.) and left fielder Rob Gonzalez (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) both recorded one RBI and one run scored, while second baseman Brian Bustillo (fr. Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) crossed the plate once.
New Jersey City went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by Ramirez. Rowan tied the game (1-1) in the third. Lenig singled to center field, scoring Scott. The Profs took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. Marsch hit a solo shot. O’Brien was hit by a pitch and later came home on an error. Citro was hit by a pitch with the bases load, allowing Johanson to cross the plate. In the bottom half, Gonzalez’s single drove in Mena and Gutierrez followed with a RBI single.
Weaver led off the fifth with a solo homer to make the score, 5-3. In the bottom of the inning, Burke doubled in Mena and Ramirez and he came home on an error. In the top of the sixth, Turano’s single through the left side plated Lenig and Citro. O’Brien drove in Turano with a fielder’s choice and he came home on Johanson’s double. The Gothic Knights pulled within one (9-8) after getting two runs in the bottom half. Witte and Ramirez each had a RBI single.
Rowan recorded two runs in the top of the seventh. Citro doubled to third base. He went to third on a passed ball and scored on an error. Weaver came home on a RBI single by Turano. The Profs tallied three runs in the ninth. Johanson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in Turano. Marsch crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Magliaro and Scott’s sacrifice fly to center field drove in O’Brien. Burke hit a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to end the scoring.
In the nightcap, left-hander Michael Cox (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) tossed 5.2 innings, giving up one earned run on six hits. He (4-1) struck out four hitters. Righty Thomas Vermazen (so. San Diego, CA/Point Loma) went 7.0 innings, allowing four runs for the loss (0-7).
Marsch collected three hits (four at bats), six RBIs, two runs scored, two doubles and a home run. Citro went three for five with one run scored and a double. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (so. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) added two hits (four at bats), two runs scored and a double. Weaver finished the game with one hit (three at bats) and two runs scored. Catcher Sean Bowen (so. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) drove in one run with one hit (four at bats).
For New Jersey City, Gonzalez and Gutierrez posted two hits (four at bats) and one run scored apiece. Burke was one for four with a solo home run. Mena had one RBI.
The Profs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Citro led off with a double and went to third on a single by Weaver. Marsch followed with a two run double to left field. Bowen knocked in Marsch with a single up the middle. The Gothic Knights got one run in the second on Burke’s home run.
In the third, Winkler doubled down the left field line. He came home on a double by Marsch. Rowan added three runs in the top of the eighth on a three run homer by Marsch. In the bottom half, Gonzalez crossed the plate on a bases loaded balk. Gutierrez came in on a ground out by Mena.
