MAHWAH, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Ramapo College on Saturday. Ramapo won the first game, 7-6 and Rowan came back to take the second, 8-6.
The Profs have a 20-12 record with an 11-4 conference mark. The Roadrunners are 17-14 overall and 6-8 in the NJAC.
Right-hander PJ Cerreto (fr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) was the winning pitcher in the first game. In three scoreless relief innings, Cerreto (3-2) only allowed two hits. Righty Ryan Peterson (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) took the loss.
Ramapo trailed 6-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Nicholas DiGirolamo (jr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) singled home outfielder Michael Hansford (fr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough). Second baseman Mark Ruggiero (sr. Fairfield, NJ/West Essex Reg.) knocked in outfielder Jordan Greenberg (fr. Butler, NJ/Butler) with a single for the tying run. Third baseman Joey Cacchiola (sr. Union, NJ/Union) scored on an error in the eighth which was the winning run.
Ruggiero ended the game with two hits (five at bats) and two RBIs. Right fielder Dan Mauriello (so. Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury) totaled two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Designated hitter Christian Spurr (fr. Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) was two for four with one run scored and a double.
For Rowan, catcher Nick Turano (so. Manlapan, NJ/Manlapan) collected two hits (four at bats) and three RBIs. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) was three for four with one RBI, one run scored and a double. Third baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) contributed with three hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (so. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) scored three runs.
The Roadrunners had a 4-0 lead after the second inning. The Profs scored two runs in the top of the third and trailed by two (4-2). Weaver had a RBI double, scoring Winkler. Turano plated Weaver with a single. In the fifth, Winkler crossed the plate on right fielder Jordan Marsch’s (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) single. The Profs had a 6-4 advantage after three runs in the sixth. With two outs, center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) singled in Lenig. Citro and Winkler came home on a single by Turano.
In the nightcap, left-hander Michael Cox (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) went 6.1 innings for the win on the mound. Cox (3-1) scattered eight hits and gave up two runs, one was earned. He also struck out four batters. Right-hander Michael Murano (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick) took the loss. He pitched 4.1 innings.
Lenig collected three hits (five at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Marsch added a double and two RBIs. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.), Turano and Weaver each added one hit and one RBI. Weaver and Magliaro also scored one run apiece. Third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) added one hit and one run scored.
For the Roadrunners, DiGirolamo was three for five with three RBIs. First baseman Dan Moreno (so. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) tallied three hits (four at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. Greenberg added two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
Ramapo got on the scoreboard first with one run in the bottom of the third inning. Catcher Michael McGuckin (jr. Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) scored on a ground out with DiGirolamo at the plate. Rowan tied the score in the fourth inning with a RBI double by Turano then took the lead with six runs in the fifth. Magliaro singled in one run and Lenig posted a two RBI single. Citro came home on Weaver’s single. Marsch drove in two runs with a double. The Profs had their final run in the sixth for an 8-1 advantage. First baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) crossed the plate on Lenig’s single.
The Roadrunners rallied for one run in the bottom half of the sixth. They added three more runs in the eighth and trailed 8-5. Right hander John O’Hara (jr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) came in for the Profs for the last out in the eighth. He was on the mound in the ninth and only allowed two hits and one earned run for his fifth save.
Next week, Rowan travels to Elizabethtown College on Tuesday, April 27 for a 3:30 p.m. nonconference game.
