Widener Defeats Rowan, 4-1

CHESTER, PA – The Widener University baseball team defeated Rowan University, 4-1 in a nonconference game on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pride improve to 14-9, while the Profs have an 18-11 record. Left-hander Matt Day (so. Plymouth Meeting, PA/LaSalle College High School) earned the win on the mound. He (1-0) pitched one inning, allowing one hit. Widener platooned its staff, utilizing nine different pitchers. Lefty Joe Sessa (so. Broomall, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) threw the final inning to pick up his first save of the season. Rowan left-hander Kyle Brown (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) went 3.2 innings, surrendering two earned runs. He (1-2) struck out five hitters.

Catcher Dennis Hocker (fr. Coral Springs, FL/Coral Springs Charter) led Widener with one hit (three at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Second baseman Matt Hone (fr. Newtown, PA/Council Rock N.) went two for five with one RBI. First baseman Colin Keelan (sr. Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph’s) drove in one run. Right fielder Joe Peticca (sr. Linwood, PA/Chichester), left fielder Dan Sieracki (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace) and third baseman Tom Connelly (sr. Media, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) all scored once.

For Rowan, catcher Sean Bowen (so. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was three for four with a double. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) added one hit (two at bats), one RBI and a triple. Third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored once.

Widener took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Connelly walked and Hocker followed with a two run homer to right field. Rowan cut the deficit to one (2-1) with one run in the top of the fifth. Woodend reached base on a walk and stole second. Citro’s triple to center field plated Woodend. The Pride tacked on one run in the seventh and eighth innings. Keelan’s sacrifice fly scored Sieracki in the seventh and Hone’s single brought Peticca home in the eighth.

Rowan travels to Rutgers-Camden on Thursday, April 22 for a 5 p.m. conference game.
