Rowan Splits Doubleheader With Rutgers-Newark

GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University and Rutgers-Newark University split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday. Rowan won the first game, 4-3 and Rutgers-Newark took the second, 8-7.

The Profs are 17-10 overall and 9-3 in the conference. The Scarlet Raiders have a 15-15 overall record and a 6-4 NJAC mark. In the first game, right-hander Jeff White (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) earned the win. White (4-1) pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs and striking out 11 hitters. Left-hander Billy Cerruti (jr. Oceanport, NJ/Shore Reg.) took the loss. He (2-4) gave up four runs and struck out five batters in seven innings.

Rowan was led by right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) with two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) registered one hit (three at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) was one for three with two runs scored. Third baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) went one for four with one run scored.

For Rutgers-Newark, shortstop Patrick Reitemeyer (jr. Kearny, NJ/St. Mary’s (Rutherford)) produced two hits (four at bats), two runs scored, one RBI, a home run and a double. Second baseman Matt Connors (jr. Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) added one hit (four at bats) and one run scored.

The Scarlet Raider went ahead, 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Connors reached base on a single and scored on an error. The Profs took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the fifth. Turano ripped a two run double to left center field and Marsch followed with a RBI single. Rutgers-Newark pulled within one (3-2) in the top of the sixth. Reitemeyer doubled to center field and came home on a wild pitch.

In the top of the eighth, Reitemeyer tied the game (3-3) with a solo homer. In the bottom half, Weaver singled and moved to second on a passed ball. After Turano walked, both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Marsch’s single to center field plated Weaver for the winning run.

In the nightcap, lefty Michael Hansen (sr. Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) pitched the final two innings for the victory. He (1-1) only allowed one hit and struck out one batter. Right-hander John O’Hara (jr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) tossed the final inning for the Profs. He (1-1) surrendered one run on two hits.

Designated hitter Anthony Yeswita (sr. Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) paced the Scarlet Raiders with three hits (five at bats), four RBIs, one run scored, a home run and a double. Connors went three for five with four runs scored and one RBI. Reitemeyer contributed with two hits (five at bats) and two RBIs. Pinch hitter Michael Cassese (jr. Bellville, NJ/Belleville) was one for one with one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Robert Kistner (fr. Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) and catcher Anthony Palladino (so. Emerson, NJ/Emerson) both compiled one hit (four at bats) and one run scored.

For Rowan, shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) was three for three with two runs scored and one RBI. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (so. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) totaled two hits (four at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Weaver tallied one hit (four at bats) and two RBIs. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Marsch had two hits and one run scored apiece. Designated hitter Kevin O’Brien (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and catcher Sean Bowen (so. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) each had a hit and scored one run.

Rutgers-Newark posted one run in the first and third innings to go up, 2-0. In the first, Yeswita singled in Connors. Yeswita’s double to right center field scored Connors in the third. Rowan tied the game (2-2) with two runs in the bottom of the third. Winkler doubled and came home on a single by Magliaro. Citro reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored on a wild pitch.

The Profs took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Magliaro crossed the plate on a ground out by Weaver. The Scarlet Raiders posted fifth runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead, 7-3. Connors’ single drove in Kistner and Cassese had a RBI single. Reitemeyer knocked in Connors with a single down the left field line. Yeswita followed with a two run homer. In the bottom half, Weaver singled off the pitcher to bring Magliaro home.

Rowan tied the game at seven with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded, Marsch crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Winkler ripped a two run single up the middle. In the top of the ninth, Connors led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cassese. Reitemeyer ripped a single to center field and Connors came home.

Rowan travels to Haverford College on Tuesday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m. Rutgers-Newark hosts Wilkes University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
