GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader over William Paterson University, 6-3 and 7-1 on Saturday.
Rowan is in first place in the conference with a 15-6 overall record and a 7-0 NJAC mark. The Profs have won seven straight games. William Paterson is 13-10-1 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
In the first game, right-hander Jeff White (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) pitched eight innings, allowing one earned run for the win. He (3-1) struck out 10 batters. Righty Ryan Peterson (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his second save. Left-hander Brett Carroll (jr. River Edge, NJ/River Dell Reg.) gave up six unearned runs in eight innings for the loss. He (3-1) tallied 10 strikeouts.
Profs’ designated hitter Eric Newell (jr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) was one for four with two RBIs and one run scored. Second baseman Brandon Winkler (so. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) added one hit (three at bats) and two RBIs. Catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) went two for three and scored twice. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) contributed with one hit (two at bats) and one run scored, while shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) scored once.
For the Pioneers, designated hitter Mike Guadango (sr. Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands) totaled three hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Third baseman Rob Somers (so. West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Reg.) was two for five with a run scored. Catcher Zac Rose (jr. Nutley, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) registered two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Left fielder Mike Linskey (fr. Stanhope, NJ/Pope John XXIII (Sparta)) and center fielder Andrue Laguerre (sr. Jersey City, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) both had one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Pinch runner Jonattan Fernandez (so. Paterson, NJ/Sports Business Academy (Eastside)) crossed the plate once.
William Paterson went ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Linskey singled up the middle scoring Somers and Rose knocked in Guadango with a single through the left side. In the bottom of the second, Winkler drove in first baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Turano. Newell reached base on an error and went to second on Winkler’s single. He stole third and came home when the catcher threw the ball over the third baseman’s head to give Rowan at 3-2 lead.
The Pioneers tied the game (3-3) in the top of the eigth. Rose singled and Fernandez pinch ran for him. Pinch hitter Mike Moran (jr. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) singled to left center field moving Fernandez to second. Laguerre hit a single through the left side, plating Fernandez. The Profs answered with three runs in the bottom half. Magliarro and Citro got on base by errors. After a ground out by left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) to advance the runners to second and third, Turano was intentionally walked. On an attempted pick off play, Magliaro crossed the plate on an error by the third baseman. Newell ripped a two run single to left field bringing Turano and Citro in.
In the nightcap, left-hander Michael Cox (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) went six innings, surrendering one earned run. Cox (2-1) struck out three hitters. Righty Dan Alcala (so. Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley) took the loss for the Pioneers. He (1-1) allowed three earned runs in three innings.
Right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) led Rowan with three hits (four at bats) and two runs scored. Magliaro was one for five with two RBIs and one run scored. Turano posted one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Sean Bowen (so. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and Citro all drove in one run. Second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.), Johanson and Weaver scored one run apiece.
Pioneers’ left fielder Jack Montanile (so. Weehawken, NJ/Hudson Catholic) went two for four with one RBI. Guadango scored William Paterson’s only run. Shortstop Anthony Dorio (so. Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) and Laguerre both had two hits in four trips to the plate.
William Paterson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Guadango reached base on a fielder’s choice and went to second on a balk. He moved to third on a wild pitch. Montanile’s single to third base brought Guadango home. In the bottom of the fourth, Weaver led off with a double to left field. Turano drove him in with a single down the right field line. Bowen walked with the bases loaded, scoring Turano. Woodend’s sacrifice fly to center field, plated Marsch to put the Profs ahead, 3-1.
Rowan tacked on four runs in the sixth inning. Marsch singled and Johanson followed with a walk. They advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Lenig was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Magliaro hit a single to center field to bring Marsch and Johanson home. Citro knocked in Lenig with a single up the middle. Citro went to second and Magliaro reached third on a wild pitch. Magliaro crossed the plate on an error by the catcher.
