Rowan Falls to 20th Ranked SUNY Cortland

AUBURNDALE, FL – The Rowan University baseball team lost to 20th ranked SUNY Cortland, 7-6 on Thursday afternoon. The game was played at Lake Myrtle Field.

The Red Dragons scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning. Designated hitter Steve Nickel drove in right fielder Adam Dimino with a double. Dimino reached base on a fielder’s choice. Nickel finished the game with three hits (five at bats), three RBIs and one run scored.

Second baseman Matt June contributed with three hits in five at bats and scored one run. Shortstop Shawn Bailey went two for four with one RBI and two runs scored. Center fielder Khyle Dimino, first baseman John Zilnicki and Adam Dimino each added a RBI. Right hander Brendan Hourihan earned his first win of the year in relief. He only allowed one hit in 3.2 innings.

Cortland has an 8-4 record while Rowan is 7-5 on the season. For the Profs, center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) totaled two hits (four at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a triple. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) registered two hits in four at bats and two runs scored. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) and first baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had one RBI apiece.

Rowan got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when Lenig crossed the plate on an error. Both teams scored a run in the second inning. Adam Dimino scored on a groundout. Citro’s RBI triple put the Profs up 2-1. In the fourth, Magliaro came home on an error after reaching base with a single.

Cortland took the lead (4-3) with three runs in the top of the sixth. Nickel drove in two runs with a single. Zilnicki’s sacrifice fly later sent home Nickel. In the bottom half, Rowan went ahead 6-4. Citro singled in two runs and scored on a fielder’s choice with Weaver at the plate.

Rowan plays its last game in Florida on Friday, March 19 against Stevens Institute of Technology at 11 a.m.
