Rowan Holds On to Beat Suffolk, 11-8

LEESBURG, FL – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Suffolk University (MA), 11-8 at the Russ Matt Tournament on Monday. The game was played at Pat Thomas Stadium.

Rowan improves to 6-4 overall, while Suffolk has a 1-3 record. Right hander Jeff White (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) threw seven innings, allowing one unearned run. He struck out seven batters for his first win of the season. Lefty Mark Doyle went 4.1 innings, giving up three runs for the loss.

The Profs were led by left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) with four hits (six at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. First baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) went three for five with three RBIs, one run scored and a homer. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) added three hits (four at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) was three for five with two runs scored, one RBI and two doubles.

For the Rams, catcher Mark Annese registered two hits (five at bats), three RBIs and one run scored. Third baseman Chris Stanley had two hits (two at bats), two runs scored and one RBI. Second baseman Jhonneris Mendez drove in two runs with two hits (two at bats).

Rowan scored one run in the first, second and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Lenig reached base on a single and came home on a fielder’s choice in the first. Magliaro’s single plated right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) in the second and Weaver hit a solo home run in the fifth. The Profs tacked on four runs in the sixth. Citro doubled in Magliaro, catcher Nick Turano’s (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) doubled knocked in Citro and Johanson connected on a two run homer.

In the top of the seventh, Magliaro came home on a sacrifice fly and Weaver’s single brought Citro home to make the score, 9-0. Suffolk got one run in the bottom half on a RBI single by left fielder Mike Cunningham. Rowan added one run in the top of the eighth when Magliaro drove in third baseman Brad Woodend (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) with a single. The Rams cut the deficit to five (10-5) with four runs in the bottom half. Annese had a two run single, Mendez knocked in a run with a single and Annese scored on a wild pitch.

The Profs added an insurance run in the ninth on a RBI single by Johanson that scored Weaver. Suffolk produced three runs in the bottom half, but Rowan held on for the win. Stanley and Mendez each drove in a run with a single and pinch hitter Joe Harvey scored on a ground out by Annese.
