Rowan Splits Doubleheader with Worcester State

LAKELAND, FL – The Rowan University baseball team split a doubleheader with Worcester State College (MA) on Sunday. Rowan won the first game, 8-4 in seven innings and Worcester State took the second, 9-8 in eight innings. The games were played at Henley Field.

Rowan has a 5-4 record and Worcester State is 1-2-1. In the first game, right hander John O’Hara (jr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) picked up the win in relief. He allowed one earned run and struck out two hitters in one inning. Lefty Chad Kasik took the loss for the Lancers.

Designated hitter Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) went two for three with five RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) was one for two with two runs scored and one RBI. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) had two hits (three at bats), one run scored and a double. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) chipped in with one hit (three at bats) and two runs scored. Second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) chipped in with a double and scored once.

For Worcester State, catcher Johno Hinkell recorded two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. First baseman Nick Fluegge, right fielder Nick Caparell and pinch hitter Paul Rodriguez all had a solo home run.

Worcester State took at 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a homer by Caparell. Hinkell came home on a double by center fielder Corey Abbascia in the fourth. Rowan tied the game (2-2) with two runs in the bottom half. Weaver scored on a ground out and Turano came in on a wild pitch. The Lancers added one run in the fifth inning on Fluegge’s home run. The Profs went ahead, 4-3 with two runs in the bottom half. Weaver’s single plated Magliaro and Citro scored on Turano’s sacrifice fly.

Rodriguez led off the seventh with a solo homer that tied the game (4-4). Turano hit a walk off grand slam in the bottom half to give Rowan the win.

In the nightcap, righty Kevin Hayes picked the win in relief. He tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits. Right hander Kyle Norman (jr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) was credited with the loss.

The Lancers were led by Hinkell with three hits (four at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Abbascia went two for three with two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Second baseman Ryan LaPrade registered one hit (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Caparell scored twice and right fielder Chris Creen crossed the plate once.

For Rowan, Turano went two for four with two RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. First baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had two hits (four at bats), three RBIs and a double. Weaver compiled two hits (three at bats), three runs scored and a double. Lenig posted one hit (five at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a home run. Citro added two hits (five at bats) and one RBI. Right fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was two for three with one run scored.

Worcester State tallied three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Abbascia doubled in Creen and LaPrade’s single plated Abbascia and Hinkell. Rowan cut the deficit to one (3-2) with two runs in the top of the fourth. Turano doubled in Weaver and later scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom half, shortstop TJ Magnell singled and Hinkell came home. The Lancers tacked on two runs in the fifth. Fluegge led off with a solo homer and Hinkell doubled scoring Caparell.

In the top of the sixth, Turano’s double plated Lenig. Johanson added a two run single to make the score, 6-5. Rowan went ahead, 7-6 with two runs in the top of the seventh. Lenig hit a solo home run and Johanson doubled in Weaver. Worcester State tied the game at seven in the bottom half. Caparell hit a triple and come home on a single by right fielder Jake Sanderski. In the top of the eighth, Citro drove in Marsch with a double to left center field to give the Profs an 8-7 advantage. In the bottom half, Abbascia crossed the plate on an error and left fielder Corey McDonald singled in LaPrade for the winning run.

Rowan plays Suffolk University on Monday, March 15 at 11:30 a.m. The game will be played at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg, FL.
