MAHWAH, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team advanced in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament with a 3-2 win at Ramapo College on Thursday.
The remaining games of the double elimination tournament will be held at the top seed Kean University on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. On Saturday, Rowan (21-14-1), the sixth seed, plays the third seed William Paterson University (23-16) at noon. The fifth seed Ramapo College ends the season with a 19-18 record.
In the first game, Kean University (33-8) meets the second seed Montclair State University (24-14) at 8 a.m. The winner faces the fourth seed The College of New Jersey (22-16-1) at 4 p.m. Sunday’s schedule will be determined by the remaining teams after Saturday’s games. The NJAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Rowan scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, designated hitter Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) singled to right field. He was replaced by pinch runner Scott Weaver (so. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) who stole second. Right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) walked then Weaver went to third on a stolen base. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) hit a bunt single that scored Weaver.
Right-hander Mike Swietanski (so. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) pitched eight innings for the victory. Swietanski (4-1) gave up seven hits and two runs, one earned. He struck out four batters. Lefty Michael Cox (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) was on the mound in the last inning and for his second save. Right-hander Tim Hannes (so. Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands) took the loss. Hannes (4-3) allowed seven hits and had four strikeouts.
Mull ended the game with two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) contributed with one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) and third baseman Sean Bowen (fr. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) each added one hit and one run scored. Catcher Tim Barnshaw (sr. Dayton, NJ/S. Brunswick) chipped in with two hits (five at bats) and second baseman David Lenig (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) had one RBI.
For Ramapo, first baseman Joey Cacchiola (jr. Union, NJ/Union) was two for four at the plate. Center fielder Mike Manges (sr. Glen Rock, NJ/Paramus Catholic) registered one hit (three at bats) and two RBIs. Right fielder Daniel Mauriello (fr. Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodburry) and third baseman Justin Leon (so. New City, NY/Clarkstown N.) both scored one run.
The Roadrunners got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the second innings. Manges drove in Leon and Mauriello with a single. The Profs tied the game in the third. Marsch came home on Magliaro’s single to left field. Bowen reached base with a single and later crossed the plate on a ground out with Lenig getting the RBI.
