Richard Stockton Out Lasts Rowan, 7-6 in 10 innings

POMONA, NJ – Third baseman Chris Wedding hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Richard Stockton College a 7-6 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday.

The game was tied (9-9) after nine innings and the Ospreys held the Profs in the top of the 10th. In the bottom half, center fielder Nick DiGirolamo (so. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) reached base with a walk. Left fielder Jay Merulla (jr. Logan Twp., NJ/Kingsway Reg.) followed with a single that moved DiGirolamo to third. Wedding’s (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) single plated DiGirolamo.

Richard Stockton improves to 15-15 overall and 4-12 in the conference. Rowan has a 19-11-1 record and an 8-7 NJAC mark. Right-hander Ed Truitt (fr. New Gretna, NJ/Pinelands Reg.) picked up the win in relief. Truitt (2-0) threw 0.2 scoreless innings. Righty Kevin O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) took the loss for the Profs. O’Hara (2-2) allowed one run on two hits in 0.2 innings.

Merulla recorded three hits (five at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Catcher Nick Scalise (fr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) was one for three with two RBIs, one run scored and a home run. DiGirolamo and Wedding both had one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Marc Asta (fr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) crossed the plate twice.

For the Profs, center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) went four for five with two RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. Catcher Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) added one hit (four at bats), two RBIs and a double. First baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) posted two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Third baseman/shortstop David Lenig (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) had two hits (four at bats) and one run scored.

Both teams scored one run in the third inning. In the top half, Ready recorded a RBI single. Merulla got on with a single in the bottom half and later scored on a ground out. In the top of the fourth, Mull doubled in right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and shortstop Marc Magliaro’s (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) scored Mull. The Ospreys tied the game (3-3) with two runs in the bottom half. Merulla ripped a two RBI double with the bases loaded.

The Profs went ahead 6-3 with three runs in the fifth inning. Mull drove in one run with a double and Reindel followed with a two RBI double. Richard Stockton cut the deficit to two runs (6-4) with one run in the sixth. Asta got on base with a single and moved to second on an error. DiGirolamo drove Asta in with a single. In the bottom of the ninth, Wedding reached base on an error and Scalise hit a two run homer to send the game into extra innings.
