Rowan Splits Doubleheader With NJCU

GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University and New Jersey City University split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) baseball doubleheader on Sunday. Rowan won the first game, 12-9 and NJCU took the second, 9-8.

The Profs are 19-10-1 overall and 8-6 in the conference. The Gothic Knights have a 13-21-1 record with a 3-11 NJAC mark. Right-hander Ryan Peterson (so. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) was the winning pitcher in the first contest. Peterson (1-1) tossed 3.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs. Lefty Michael Cox (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) threw a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the year. Righty Tom Burke (so. Edison, NJ/Immaculata) pitched a complete game for the Gothic Knights. Burke (0-1) gave up 12 runs, eight earned.

Rowan was led by right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) with three hits (five at bats), six RBIs, two runs scored, two doubles and a home run. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) added three hits (five at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. First baseman Sam Parks (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Woodstown) was two for five with two RBIs, one run scored and a homer. Catcher Tim Barnshaw (sr. Dayton, NJ/S. Brunswick) compiled two hits (five at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and two doubles.

For NJCU, left fielder Joe Steinberger (fr. San Diego, CA/San Diego) went one for five with three RBIs and one run scored. Burke contributed with one hit (four at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Center fielder Mark Hoyer (sr. Irvine, CA/Woodbridge (CA)) posted two hits in four trips to the plate, two runs scored and one RBI. Shortstop Michael Fiorentino (so. Pt. Pleasant Beach, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Beach) and second baseman Rob Gonzalez (fr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) scored two and one run respectively.

Rowan scored six runs in the first inning. McMullin and Mull each drove in two runs with a double and Parks added a two run shot over the left field wall. The Profs added two runs in the second on McMullin’s two run homer. In the third, Barnshaw doubled in a run and scored on an error. McMullin recorded a two RBI double.

New Jersey City fought back with seven runs in the top of the fifth to make the score, 12-7. Hoyer got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded bringing in third baseman Jeff Karczewski (so. Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton W.). Catcher Kristopher Brus (sr. Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) followed with a RBI single. Steinberger knocked in two runs with a single and Burke hit a three run homer. The Gothic Knights scored two more runs in the ninth, but the Profs held on.

In the nightcap, NJCU right-hander Steve Hallam (sr. Harrison, NJ/Harrison) pitched 2.2 innings in relief for the win. Hallam (2-1) surrendered two runs on four hits. Righty Joseph Tarallo (jr. South Amboy, NJ/Hoffman) tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save. Rowan right-hander Robert Rose (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) took the loss. Rose (3-1) threw 1.1 innings in relief, giving up four runs, two earned.

First baseman Jose Colon (sr. Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy (NY)) led the Gothic Knights with three hits (four at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored and two home runs. Hoyer went three for five with two RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. Designated hitter Alex Mena (jr. North Bergen, NJ/Hudson Catholic) had two hits (four at bats), two runs scored, one RBI, a double and a home run.

For Rowan, McMullin registered three hits (five at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Mull was two for four with three RBIs, one run scored and a home run. First baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) totaled two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Pete Delleani (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) chipped in with two hits (four at bats), two runs scored and one RBI.

New Jersey City went ahead 3-0 after two runs in the second inning and one in the third. Colon led off the second with a solo homer and center fielder Eddie Gonzalo (jr. Union City, NJ/Union Hill) followed with a RBI single. Colon hit his second solo home run in the third.

Rowan tied the score (3-3) in the bottom of the fourth on Mull’s three run shot over the left field fence. The Gothic Knights added one run in the top of the fifth. Colon hit a single to right field, plating Hoyer. The Profs went ahead 7-4 with four runs in the bottom half. Ready and Delleani both hit RBI singles. McMullin doubled in a run and came in on a ground out.

New Jersey City recorded one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie the score at 7-7. Mena hit a solo homer in the sixth, while Hallam and Hoyer both came in on an error in the seventh. Rowan went ahead 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh. Delleani doubled and McMullin drove him in with a single. The Gothic Knights posted two runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead for good (9-8). Hoyer’s double to left center field plated Gonzalez and Fiorentino.

Rowan travels to York College (PA) for a nonconference game on Monday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m.
