Rowan Wins Two Games at Rutgers-Newark, 20-17 and 11-4

NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won two conference games at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday. Rowan had a 20-17 victory in the first contest and took the second, 11-4. The second game was called in the top of the seventh inning on account of darkness.

The first game lasted four hours and 20 minutes and the two teams combined for 46 hits that included 11 home runs. The Profs scored in all nine of the innings. Right-hander Mike Swietanski (so. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) pitched five innings for the victory.

Rowan designated hitter Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) was two for four with five RBIs, four runs scored and two home runs. Ready recorded a grand slam in the second inning and he had a leadoff homer in the seventh. Second baseman Pete Delleani (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) totaled five hits (six at bats), five RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. He blasted a three run shot in the eighth inning. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) went four for six with three RBIs, three runs scored, a double and a home run. Mull’s two run homer came in the third inning.

Catcher Tim Barnshaw (sr. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) contributed with three hits (six at bats), three RBIs , two runs scored and a double. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) had two hits in four trips to the plate, one RBI and one run scored. Third baseman David Lenig (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) added two hits (five at bats) and three runs scored.

For Rutgers-Newark, designated hitter Anthony Yeswita (jr. Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) went five for five with six RBIs, four runs scored and three home runs. Third baseman Joe Furnaguera (jr. Springfield, NJ/Dayton) registered four hits (six at bats), four RBIs, four runs scored and three homers. Second baseman Matt Connors (so. Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) and center fielder Brian Gill (sr. Wall, NJ/Wall) each had three hits and one RBI. First baseman Matt Lingo (jr. Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) totaled two hits (five at bats), one RBI, one run scored, a double and a home run.

Right-hander Jay Gallen (jr. Gibbsboro, NJ/Bishop Eustace) pitched six innings for the victory in the nightcap. Gallen (5-0) scattered nine hits and had four strikeouts. Mull compiled four hits (four at bats), four runs scored, three doubles and one RBI. Right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was one for four with three RBIs, one run scored and a double.
Catcher Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and first baseman Matt Johanson (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had two RBIs apiece. Left fielder Scott Weaver (so. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) and Lenig both had two hits. Ready and Lenig each scored two runs.

Connors went three for four with one RBI, one run scored and a triple for the Scarlet Raiders. Lingo posted two hits (three at bats) and two RBIs. Designated hitter Christian Diaz (sr. New Milford, NJ/New Milford) and Furnaguera had two hits apiece.

Rowan has a rescheduled doubleheader against New Jersey City University on Sunday, April 19 at noon.
