Rowan Picks Up 6-5 Win Over Albright

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Albright College, 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon.

The score was tied 5-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Rowan first baseman Matt Johanson (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) doubled to right field. Second baseman Pete Delleani (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) followed with a single through the left side that moved Johanson to third. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) reach base on a fielder’s choice and Johanson came home.

Rowan has a 10-3-1 record, while Albright is 7-7. Profs’ left-hander Michael Cox (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) earned the victory in relief. Cox (1-0) tossed 3.2 innings, scattering three hits and striking out four hitters. Righty Todd Burdette (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) pitched the final inning and recorded two strikeouts for his sixth save of the year. Left-hander Tyler Storms (fr. Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood) took the loss for the Lions. He threw five innings in relief and gave up three runs, one earned.

Designated hitter Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) went two for four with one run scored and one RBI. Left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) added one hit (two at bats), one run scored, one RBI and a double. Right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) scored once and drove in one run. Center fielder Keith Evans (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) and third baseman Brad Woodend (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) both scored once.

For Albright, shortstop Patrick Brady (so. Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) was one for five with two RBIs and one run scored. Third baseman Jason Dunkelberger (sr. Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Left fielder Rob Mancinelli (so. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit), catcher Matt Kozlowski (jr. Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic) and second baseman Kevin Butler (jr. Wilkes-Barre, PA/Coughlin) all scored one run, while right fielder Mike Nolan (jr. Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) registered one RBI.

The Profs went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Ready singled up the middle plating Evans, who reached base on an error. Marsch’s double moved Ready to third. McMullin grounded out to second base, scoring Ready. The Lions took a 4-2 lead in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Brady singled through right side knocking in Kozlowski and Mancinelli. Butler came home on a wild pitch and Dunkelberger drove in Brady with a single. In the bottom half, Woodend led off with a single and moved to third on Ready’s single. Marsch hit into a double play, but Woodend crossed the plate to make the score, 4-3.

In the top of the fifth, Lawrence reached base on an error. He moved to third on Dunkelberger’s single and scored on an error. Rowan tied the game (5-5) with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Catcher Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) was safe at first base on an error by the pitcher while attempting a sacrifice bunt and Marsch came all the way around from second base to score. With runners at first and third, first baseman Sam Parks (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Woodstown) got on base on an error and McMullin came home.

Rowan begins its conference schedule on Thursday, March 26 at home against Richard Stockton College at 3:30 p.m.
