Rowan Tops Suffolk, 9-7

WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University baseball had a 9-7 victory over Suffolk University in the Russ Matt Tournament on Sunday.

Rowan improves to 5-1-1, while Suffolk has a 2-2 record. Right-hander Mike Swietanski (so. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) recorded his first win of the year. Swietanski (1-0) went six innings, allowing one run on two hits. He recorded three strikeouts. Righty Todd Burdette (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) picked up his first save of the season in relief. He tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out two hitters. Right-hander Alex Torres (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Rams. He gave up four runs, three earned in five innings.

Shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) went two for four with one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Keith Evans (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) added one hit (four at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a triple. Left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was one for three with one RBI, one run scored and a double.

Rowan went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) crossed the plate on Marsch’s double. Suffolk tied the game (1-1) in the top of the fourth. Catcher Bobby Barrett drove in second baseman Paul Vittozzi with a single. Rowan scored one run in the bottom half. Third baseman Pete Delleani (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) singled in Marsch.

The Profs added two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to go up 7-1. In the fifth, second baseman Brad Woodend (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored on an error and Ready came home on a single by right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Pinch runner Scott Weaver (so. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) crossed the plate on an error in the sixth. Evans’ triple knocked in Magliaro and Evans scored on a fielder’s choice with Ready at bat.

In the top of the seventh, Rams’ center fielder Rory Gentile came home on an error. Right fielder Keith Carter drove in Barrett with a single. Rowan added two runs in the bottom half to make the score, 9-3. Delleani crossed the plate on a passed ball and Magliaro’s single brought catcher Tim Barnshaw (sr. Dayton, NJ/S. Brunswick) home. Suffolk recorded four runs in the top of the eighth, but Rowan held on for the win. Second baseman Jose Alejandro’s ground out plated third baseman Mike Kenneally. Barrett followed with a three run homer.
