AUBURNDALE, FL – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Worcester State College (MA), 8-3 in its first day of competition at the Russ Matt Tournament.
Rowan improves to 4-1-1 overall, while Worcester State has a 0-3 record. Right-hander Jay Gallen (jr. Gibbsboro, NJ/Bishop Eustace) pitched five innings for his second win of the year (2-0). He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out eight hitters. Lancers’ righty Joey Lucier (0-1) took the loss. He gave up six runs, five earned in five innings.
The Profs were led by left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) with three hits (five at bats), four RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Second baseman Brad Woodend (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) went two for four with one RBI, one run scored and a double. Center fielder Keith Evans (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) added one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
For Worcester State, center fielder Matt Hart was two for five with one run scored and a triple. Right fielder Nick Caparell added two hits (four at bats), one run scored and a double. Third baseman TJ Magnell and right fielder Shane Coakley each drove in one run.
Rowan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Marsch singled in Woodend and center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape). Right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) crossed the plate on a passed ball. The Profs tacked on one run in the third on Marsch’s solo homer.
In the top of the fourth, Woodend’s single brought Evans home to give Rowan a 5-0 advantage. In the bottom half, Worcester State cut the deficit to 5-2. Coakley had a RBI single and Caparell came home on a wild pitch. Both teams scored one run in the fifth. Marsch singled in Mull for Rowan and Magnell’s ground out plated Hart for Worcester State.
The Profs added one run in the sixth and seventh innings. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) singled and later scored on an error in the sixth. Evans singled through the left side, knocking in third baseman David Lenig (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) in the seventh.
Rowan will face Suffolk University (MA) on Sunday, March 15 at 4 p.m.
