GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Berkeley College, 82-60 in the first round of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Friday night.
Rowan (6-2) will face Delaware Valley College (5-3) in the championship on Saturday, December 12 at 3 p.m. Prior, Berkeley (2-7) plays Penn State Brandywine (0-8) in the consolation game at 1 p.m. In the other first round game on Friday, Delaware Valley beat Penn State Brandywine, 79-44.
The Profs had five players in double figures. Forward Tyson Hartnett (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) recorded 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Forward Tim Matchett (jr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) posted a season best 14 points off the bench. Guard Sean Hughes (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) scored 13 points, while center Derek Piccini (sr. Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Mem.) and guard Laud Anderson (jr. N. Brunswick, NJ/N. Brunswick Twp.) added 10 points apiece.
For the Bulldogs, forward Donovan Black (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) registered 15 points. Guard Jarrell Young (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) contributed with 12 points and six boards. Forward Sherone Nelson (Paterson, NJ/Eastside) totaled eight points and five steals.
Berkeley led 10-8 at 13:13 in the first period. Rowan scored the next seven points to go ahead 15-10 at 11:30. Hughes made a three-pointer and forward Matt DeSouza (so. Margate, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Hartnett each had a basket. Black hit a layup (11:08) and Nelson sunk a shot (10:49) to bring the Bulldogs within one (15-14). The Profs had an 8-0 run for a nine point advantage (23-14) at 8:05. Four different players scored in the surge. Matchett’s jumper at 5:31 stretched the lead to 14 points (30-16). Berkeley cut the deficit to nine (30-21) after two free throws by forward Osiris Gonzalez (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) at 3:43. Rowan had a 14-4 stretch to end the half. Hughes recorded eight points and Hartnett had six. The Profs were up 44-25 at the intermission. The leading scorer was Hughes with 13 points, followed by Hartnett with 12.
In the second stanza, the closest Berkeley came was 16 points (46-30) at 17:21. Rowan’s biggest lead of the game was 27 points at 6:19 (75-48), 4:53 (77-50) and 4:15 (79-52). Young scored 11 points in the second half for Berkeley. Anderson posted 10 points for the Profs.
