Delaware Valley Beats Penn State Brandywine, 79-44 in Heritage's Dairy Store Classic First Round

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Delaware Valley College men’s basketball won 79-44 over Penn State Brandywine in the first round of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Friday night. The tournament is being held at Rowan University.

On Saturday, Delaware Valley (5-3) meets the winner of the Berkeley College and Rowan University game in the championship at 3 p.m. Penn State Brandywine (0-8) will play in the consolation game prior at 1 p.m.

The Aggies were led by guard James Jones (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Edward Bok Tech) with 18 points and seven steals. Forward Chris Ellis (jr. Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) contributed with 14 points and five rebounds. Guard Chris Mayo (so. Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) came off the bench and scored 10 points. Guard Jason Goldheimer (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) dished five assists.

For the Nittany Lions (0-8), center Dave Buoni totaled 11 points and five boards. Forward Dave Segura registered 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

In the first half, Delaware Valley led by nine points (13-4) at 15:53 after a jumper by Jones. Guard Darryl White made two free throws at 14:14 and Penn State Brandywine trailed by six points (14-8). The Aggies were ahead 16-12 (12:10) then built a 12 advantage (26-14) with a 10-2 run that ended at 8:58. Hilinski scored four points while Goldheimer and Ellis each had three. The Nittany Lions cut the deficit to seven points (32-25) with a layup by Segura at 2:45. Delaware Valley followed with five points to lead 37-25 at the intermission. Forward Jeremy Beckett made a layup (1:54) and Jones hit a three-pointer (00:01). Jones ended the period with 12 points.

The Aggies started the second half with 21 unanswered points in 9:06 to lead by 33 points (58-24). Ellis and Jones contributed with six points apiece and forward Jason Sofman (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) followed with five points in the run. The Nittany Lions trailed by 23 points (61-38) after guard TJ Hazinsky’s three at 7:58. Mayo nailed a three-pointer with 3:01 remaining that made the score 77-40. Goldheimer added a layup at 2:50 to lead by 39 points (79-40). Delaware Valley had 10 second half points from Mayo while Ellis and Sofman each scored seven.
